The Bay Abridged: Feb 17 – Mar 1

Gardens & Villa (photo: Jon Ching) In this recurring feature known as The Bay Abridged, our staff writers will provide short, witty recaps on shows they attended around the Bay Area. A scene check, a heat check, and sometimes more — stop by every other Wednesday for the most comprehensive and concise recap of last week's Bay Area concert scene. Photos & Review: Gardens & Villa kick off an intimate opening to the 24th Noise Pop Festival

Gardens & Villas (photo: Jon Ching) Last night the California Academy of Sciences hosted another wonder-filled, dazzling evening of exploration, learning and intimate moments with creatures and organisms from around our planet. Though a weekly event, this Nite Life also kicked off the 24th year of the Noise Pop Festival with an intimate performance by Gardens & Villa in the stunning piazza of the Academy. The Santa Barbara band treated the science-loving crowd to an array of tempos and melodies, often with heartfelt sing-alongs. Charismatic frontman Chris Lynch announced that the Academy was the coolest place they've ever played and toyed with [...]

Gardens & Villa bring Santa Barbara sound to the Independent tomorrow

Perhaps one of the most addicting and up-and-coming indie synth-pop bands, Santa Barbara's own Gardens & Villa will be wrapping up their tour in support of their new album Music for Dogs at The Independent tomorrow night. Formed by five college friends after the collapse of their previous post-punk band back in 2008, Gardens and Villa have gone on to record three full length albums and toured extensively through their career. In 2011, after demoing and performing on self-financed tours, the five friends released their self-titled debut album under the production tutelage of the very talented Richard Swift (The Shins, The Arcs). Known for its [...]

Outside Lands 2014 show poster (DKNG Studios) It's that time of year again – the yearning masses will descend upon San Francisco this weekend for the City's now hallmark summer musical experience Outside Lands. Yep, the seventh edition of the gigantic gig in Golden Gate Park kicks off Friday at noon and, as you've undoubtedly learned by now, it will be headlined by none other than Kanye, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, and The Killers. Headliners can be hit-or-miss, but the strength of Outside Lands (or any festival, for that matter) typically lies in the undercard. Sure, you may get [...]

Friday: Ears of the Beholder celebrates five years with Gardens & Villa, Painted Palms and more

Five years of doing anything is a milestone, whether that be one nonstop mission or something a little less linear. With that in mind, our fellow local blog and music event curator Ears of the Beholder celebrates its "birthday" with a WillCall-presented party this Friday, August 30th at the Rickshaw Stop (RSVP on Facebook). EOTB has been involved with numerous parts of the music community to date, including Noise Pop pop-ups, compilations and curated playlists, one-off shows in support of emerging local and non-local artists, as well as providing some editorial insight on The Bay Bridged's "Best Of" yearly roundup. Gardens & Villa announce tour, remix Polica, and contribute to Fleetwood Mac tribute album

As the headline suggests, there's lots of Gardens & Villa news to share with you guys. Quickly entering "road warrior" status, the SoCal quintet recently announced a full September/October show schedule, including nine dates as direct support for rising Minneapolis stars Polica. To honor this team-up, Gardens remixed Polica's track "The Maker" which you can hear below. The finished piece nods to an 80's drum/keys theme while Channy Leaneagh's vocals remain relatively untouched, creating an overall sound that matches the Soundcloud player's "Thriller"-esque art quite well. Further exemplifying their developing respect among musical peers, the band was also asked to [...]

Phono del Sol Preview: the sunny swagger of Gardens & Villa

Gardens & Villa by Gardens & Villa Santa Barbara's Gardens & Villa have only one EP available at the moment, but we're convinced they've got an entire backlog of buried albums somewhere. The four track collection plays like an anticipated follow up to two previously successful full-lengths; delivering on the media-driven hype of a band that's been around a while. Instead, we're left with the reality that, yeah, this is the quintet's first official release. Each track has a refined confidence akin to a band knowing exactly how they want to sound on record; from the new wave sounds of [...]
