Stream Friendzone’s new collection ‘While U Wait’

Even though Friendzone has been quiet recently, prepping for the release of 808s & Dark Grapes III with Main Attrakionz. Still, the forward-thinking production duo has remained prolific behind closed doors, remarking in notes accompanying a mix of unreleased material for Boiler Room earlier this year that: "[W]e only managed to find time to release maybe 3 or 4 songs to the public in 2014. Our creative output, however, has not slowed. Our playlist of unreleased Friendzone tracks has swelled to well over 4 hours long, and much of it is among our proudest work." This week, Friendzone released While [...]

Main Attrakionz drop “Ain’t No Other Way” video, announce tour

If you're anything like me, you're freaking pumped for the forthcoming Main Attrakionz album, 808s & Dark Grapes 3. If you're not, the latest track off the album, "Ain't No Other Way" should sway you. Like all tracks on the album, production was handled by Friendzone, who's also featured prominently in the Kreayshawn-directed video. Kreay took Mondre, Squadda, and Friendzone through San Francisco's Chinatown at night, and damn if it isn't all just as pretty as can be: https://www.youtube.com/watch?t=189&v=1xo3jrjK7U4 808s is out June 30 on Neil Young's Vapor Records. It's been a long process to finally get to a release, [...]

Friendzone produces tracks for Mykki Blanco and Yung Lean

I've been all up in my Friendzone lately, with the Bay Area "internet rap" production duo serving up a pair of heavy slaps for left-field hip-hop performers Mykki Blanco and Yung Lean to rap over. Although Friendzone (James Laurence and Dylan Reznick) has been up on the local beatmaker scene since 2011, the duo has definitely turned it up for 2013 by producing beats for the likes of A$AP Rocky ("Fashion Killa"), Main Attrakionz, Antwon, and Nature Boys. Fun fact: Laurence and Reznickhas played together in a band called Destroy Tokyo, which eventually evolved into Religious Girls. "Who Wanna Rumble" [...]

Mixtape: Bay Area Artists, Remixing and Remixed (Podcast #304)

Mixtape: Bay Area Artists, Remixing and Remixed (Podcast #304) All too frequently, remixes are just okay, but when they are great, they're really something special. A truly great remix can shed new light on the original artist's work and stand on its own as a unique creation. That's no easy feat, either, given the tension between staying true to an original song's components and a reworker's desire to create something new and personal. These days, it feels far too easy to get remix fatigue. Reworkings seem to pop up almost immediately after original songs are released, and they can come [...]

Mixtape: Twelve Highlights from 2012 (Podcast #295)

Mixtape: Twelve Highlights from 2012 (Podcast #295) "Best of" lists are intrinsically a tricky proposition, but compiling them is made all the more difficult by the San Francisco Bay Area's rich pool of local musical talent. This mixtape compiles twelve of our favorite local performers from this year, all of whom had big years in their respective genres. Limiting the list to twelve meant that a lot of talented folks were left off, but this mix offers a nice sampling of some of the best that 2012 had to offer. Subscribe to The Bay Bridged Podcast! Kitty Pryde, Main Attrakionz, Hottub playing #Y3K at DNA Lounge this Friday, 11/9/12

East Bay hip hop duo Main Attrakionz – fresh off their first proper full-length album Bossalinis & Fooliyones (out now on Young Ones Records) – will bring their local brand of cloud rap to DNA Lounge this Friday, November 9th for an internet-themed party dubbed "#Y3K". Listen to the Bossalinis & Fooliyones cut "Do it for the Bay", featuring DaVinci (who actually returned the favor by featuring the duo on his latest track "Cheeba"): MondreM.A.N and Squadda B will not be the main attraction of the night, however, as teenage Tumblr-rap sensation Kitty Pryde has been billed as the headliner. [...]

Mixtape: Checking Out New Bay Area Hip Hop (Podcast #277)

Mixtape: Checking Out New Bay Area Hip Hop (Podcast #277) Words by Ben Van Houten We haven't written a lot about hip hop for The Bay Bridged. Not for a lack of interest, mind you, but because I've never really felt like we had a real handle on emerging local stuff. Sure, we could write about how great E-40 is with our eyes closed, but do you need someone else telling you how great E-40 is? (If you do, then here's a tip: pick up all three volumes of The Block Brochure. You won't be disappointed. Seriously, it's nuts how [...]
