Review: Foxygen’s return to SF sold out two consecutive nights
Straight from the dusty desert playground of Coachella, Foxygen played to a sold-out crowd at The Chapel Wednesday night in the Mission. They're the neo-flower children reviving what is most likely their grandparent's generation of free love, jangly guitars, and sexually ambiguous hip-hugger jeans with just enough of the WTF factor to genuinely fit into San Francisco. The packed floor of kids who were also the band's barely adult age of early twenty-something went ballistic. The first time I saw Foxygen was last year when Unknown Mortal Orchestra headlined at the Great American Music Hall. 2013's We Are The 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic release [...]

Sam Flax joins Foxygen (New York) at Brick and Mortar, 3/26/13
Pulling from 1960s psychedelia, 1970s rock and roll and new wave of the 1980s, Sam Flax is an artist from Berkeley who operates in the realm of lo-fi pop. Submerged in and inspired by playlists from past decades, he spent six years recording in his bedroom and finally emerged in 2012 with his debut album, Age Waves. The record offers both synthpop and guitar rock flavors, with a healthy amount of reverb weaving both sides of his sound together. After colorful performances at the Noise Pop Festival and Austin's South By Southwest, Sam Flax is bringing his burning tunes back [...]

Video: Foxygen – "San Francisco" (performing tonight with Unknown Mortal Orchestra)
Last month, LA-based Foxygen (made up of Jonathan Rado and Sam France) released a video that doubles as a time machine back to San Francisco circa 1973. The duo spends the track, simply and appropriately titled (you guessed it) "San Francisco," frolicking through Golden Gate Park and emulating The Velvet Underground's Loaded in a pink hotel room. It may be an out-of-towner's rendition of SF, but the Kinks-esque, subdued psychedelic sound and acid-dancing under the trees sure evoke some post-Summer of Love nostalgia. Check out the video below: The psych-pop two-piece released a new album, We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors [...]
Live This Month: February 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #298)
Live This Month: February 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #298) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. With the twenty-first annual Noise Pop Festival taking over Bay Area venues during the last week of the month, February is already guaranteed to offer plenty of tempting local concerts. We'll be previewing Noise Pop extensively on the podcast soon, but this collection of songs shows that there are plenty of good options even before Noise Pop starts. On [...]
Review & Video: Moonface, Foxygen @ Independent, 9/12/12
According to beloved Canadian indie rocker Spencer Krug (formerly of Wolf Parade and Sunset Rubdown), Wednesday night’s show at the Independent was all about moving forward. Krug’s struggle is relatable — compared to the complex, intricate, and spastic styles of his older work, Moonface inhabits a far more subdued and rhythmic musical space. With Siinai: Heartbreaking Bravery is the album his critics always wanted Krug to make, stripped down, restrained, minimalist. But were the doubters right in the first place? As on the album, backing band duties were admirably handled by Finnish three-piece prog-rock group Siinai, along with additional keyboards [...]
Foxygen to release 'Take The Kids Off Broadway' on 7/24/12, on tour now with Magic Trick and La Sera, sets Fall dates with Moonface
Bi-coastal duo Foxygen is set to release its debut "mini-LP" Take the Kids Off Broadway on July 24th, 2012 via Jagjaguwar, and the band now has two tracks available for free download on SoundCloud. Comprised of Sam France (on vocals and hailing from Olympia, WA) and Jonathan Rado (guitar/keyboards, from NYC), Foxygen most recently posted "Waitin' 4 U", which the band boasts as reminiscent of Prince and Mott the Hoople. While that may well be an apt comparison, the track has an unmistakable Exile On Main Street-era Rolling Stones-esque swagger, all the way down to France's Jagger-like voice. Take a [...]
