Sponsored: Stay warm with local faves at the Indy this January

We'll say it: January kinda sucks. You're back at work, you're quickly running out of your holiday leftovers (or, more realistically, they've been gone since December 28), and no matter where you are in the country, it's freakin' freezing. Fear not, San Franciscans: The Independent has a solution. In addition to their regularly scheduled programming of top talent in independent music, they're featuring a number of local acts throughout January that will basically carry you through the entire month. Behold: you can start with the hand-clap-laden soul of Brothers Prince on the 6th and go out dancing with Midtown Social [...]

Three unique local acts (Foxtails Brigade, Everyone Is Dirty, Spooky Mansion) hit the Chapel

Tonight, the Chapel will play host to an excellent trio of acts, each brilliant in their own way: Foxtails Brigade, Everyone Is Dirty, and Spooky Mansion. All three bands are Bay Area locals, and all three have steered their art into striking new territory. Fronted by the silken-voiced Laura Weinbach, Foxtails Brigade concocts an idiosyncratic blend of genres that hovers somewhere between twee indie pop, lounge singing, carnival music, and however you might pin down acts like Reverie Sound Revue, Panda Bear, and Merrill Garbus’s tUnE-yArDs. Like those bands, Foxtails Brigade makes use of angular, unexpected intervals and vertiginous shifts [...]

Foxtails Brigade release video for “We Are Not Ourselves”

Any band that features a "What's in the box?" moment in their music video isn't trying to charm you. They're looking to twist your dreams into nightmares and warp your faith in mankind. Foxtails Brigade definitely accomplishes that feat in their new video for "We Are Not Ourselves," the opening track from their superb new album. Combining cheeky Americana imagery (like a fanatically distorted depiction of "Leave It to Beaver") with a touch of Dostoevsky's eerie novella "The Double," it is a frightening and fascinating descent into the murderous thoughts and deadly fantasies normally suppressed by the stiflingly artificial veneer [...]

Foxtails Brigade release new video for “No Fate”

The music of Foxtails Brigade feels like a fairy tale on the verge of becoming a nightmare: one dark turn, one misstep, and you've passed through the looking glass into a hell more horrible than pretty much any movie Tim Burton has made in the last ten years. "No Fate," from their upcoming self-titled LP, is one of the more straightforward tracks from the album. It charges ahead like nursery-rhyme punk rock, bursting at the seams with kinetic energy, its forward momentum threatening to demolish anything in its way. The accompanying video is likewise crackling with movement, from shaky shots [...]

Foxtails Brigade releases dynamic single, “Nun But The Lost”

Ever since my happenstance encounter with Oakland's Foxtails Brigade at Awaken Café a few months ago, I have been a big fan. Today the unconventional indie-pop band releases their second single, "Nun But The Lost" off their upcoming self-titled LP, set to release April via OIM Records (U.S.) and Rallye Label (Japan). Guitarist and keyboardist Anton Patzner (Judgement Day, Bright Eyes) commented on the dynamic single and said, "When [lead singer] Laura first played me her guitar part for 'Nun But The Lost' I knew we were in for a challenge. The song is totally crazy and changes keys 15 times; [...]

Noise Pop: Cave Singers at the Chapel

Cave Singers (photo: Ian Young) Dead car. Forced converse regarding new lazy foodie apps. Ambulance called for a biker's wheel caught in the trolley tracks. Lyft driver proclaiming Ed Lee's money-sucking toad-nature and disdain for Valencia Street. Ah yes, you know it's going to be a good show when all these things happen on the way — spawning a hungry soul with an appetite for rock. And beer. Noise Pop accrued an awesome and eclectic lineup for last Friday's show at the Chapel. Reviews from opener to headliner: Jacob Golden: The indie singer/songwriter left his folk-filled heart on the stage one '60s-style croon at [...]

Foxtails Brigade announce self-titled record, release percussion-powered single “We Are Not Ourselves”

The Foxtails Brigade camp has tons of great news to share this week. For one, the Oakland chamber folk group is releasing a new self-titled album, their third, on April 8th. The follow-up to their 2012 effort Time is Passed will be released on fellow Oaklanders OIM Records. What's also particularly notable is that they've struck a deal to release the album in Japan via Rallye. To tide you over until April, they have also released the first single from the record, a percussive and haunting number called "We Are Not Ourselves." The chamber-inflected folk they churn out here is dizzying and textured, with rich [...]

Foxtails Brigade premiere new video, tour

In case you haven't already seen this making the rounds in your social media feeds this week: Oakland's Foxtails Brigade has made a new video, and boy is it creepy. But would you expect anything else from the band that has previously brought us minor-key gems like this and this? Shot in one take by drummer Dominic Mercurio, in a set that sort of looks like the queue for the Haunted Mansion ride at Disneyland, the video accompanies the song "Far Away and Long Ago," the first single for OIM Records' first release, OIM Vol. 1 Compilation. Foxtails Brigade were [...]
