This month's mix features unpredictable Philly art-rock band Palm, the genre-mashing punk-meets-electronic music of Algiers, and Vinyl Williams' psych-pop. This podcast also highlights the returns of veteran indie rockers Cymbals Eat Guitars and noise project Pharmakon, whose latest albums are being heralded as career highlights. In this recurring feature known as The Bay Abridged, our staff writers will provide short, witty recaps on shows they attended around the Bay Area. A scene check, a heat check, and sometimes more — stop by every Wednesday for the most comprehensive and concise recap of last week's Bay Area concert scene. The World, Gun Outfit and Flesh World at El Rio (SF) Nov. 11 What a great fucking Wednesday at El Rio. Enticed off the couch by LA's Gun Outfit the evening delivered a rare trifecta. The World are a very new supergroup including reincarnations from the dearly [...]

Live This Month: June 2015 — an audio guide to upcoming SF concerts

http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/LTM_June_2015.mp3 Download: Live This Month: June 2015 (Podcast #364) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. A number of the Bay Area bands included in this month's mix are celebrating the release of long-overdue albums, although no band embodies that quite as much as SF band Acid King. The stoner metal group began in 1993; its new album, Middle of Nowhere, Center of Everywhere, arrives a full decade after its predecessor. Listening to "Red River," one might assume that the ten years [...]

Flesh World (ex-Brilliant Colors, Limp Wrist) to release new LP this June, play Knockout end of month

In June, San Francisco's Flesh World will release their second LP, The Wild Animals in My Life, a glassy collection of trembling, swollen guitars, and primal drumming. Flesh World's primary songwriters are Limp Wrist’s Scott Moore and Brilliant Colors’ Jess Scott, so it's no wonder their collaboration exhibits such a confident, intentional sound. Whereas 2013's MLP featured six songs of vicious, swirling post-punk tracks, this new record draws heavily from the pop wellspring that was buried just beneath the surface. Production assistance from Don Pyle, who's resume includes artists like Iggy Pop and Peaches, only further draws out the melody. The Wild Animals In My Life washes over you [...]

Flesh World – “Just To Tear Me Down”

Flesh World is Jess Scott and Diane Anastasio of Brilliant Colors and Scott Moore of Limp Wrist, and the trio's gearing up for the release of their sophomore album, The Wild Animals in My Life in June on Iron Lung Records. "Just To Tear Me Down" is the new record's first single. The song finds Scott's vocals atop an atmospheric haze, gloomy enough for fans of melodic post-punk, but with propulsive drumming that lends a insistent urgency. Really good stuff. https://soundcloud.com/iron-lung-records/02-just-to-tear-me-down-v4

Mixtape: New SF Bands with Great Musical Resumes

http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/Musical_Resumes_Mix.mp3 Download: Mixtape: New SF Bands with Great Musical Resumes (Podcast #344) In a scene as active as the San Francisco Bay Area, it's not uncommon to learn that the members of your favorite band are also involved in other musical projects. It's also not surprising to see bands break up, burn out or go through significant lineup changes, enabling former players to explore new terrain on their own. All of this means that a number of newer bands with unfamiliar names might have some familiar faces -- or, perhaps more appropriately, voices -- involved. It also means that if [...]

Scraper, Vial, Mane, Flesh World to descend upon Hemlock Tavern

On April 25, Hemlock Tavern will feature a (mostly) local lineup consisting of San Francisco bands Scraper, Mane, and Flesh World, accompanied by Los Angeles band Vial. Last year, Scraper garnered a reasonable portion of attention for their self-titled on Cut-Rate Records. And why not? The album, abrasive and scuzzy in nature, delivers a set of unabashed, simplistic punk tunes about things such as cruising the streets on a skateboard, people moving to Los Angeles, and hippies. SCRAPER LP by SCRAPER Los Angeles punk band Vial also plays. Be sure to check out the Vial's rendition of Last Rights' "Chunks" - the band [...]
