Mixtape: Great Bay Area Record Labels

Editor's note: Following the original publication of this post, we were alerted to the announcement that Death Records has closed following accusations of sexual assault against founder Brian Wakefield. Based on this news, we have removed Death Records from this post and mixtape. http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/Record_Labels_2017_Mixtape.mp3 Download: Mixtape: Great Bay Area Record Labels (Podcast #416) This episode originally ran on KQED.org. Record labels can play an important role in nurturing the growth of emerging musicians, and the Bay Area’s many local independent labels are a key piece of the vibrant local music scene. Bay Area labels help the region's musicians develop, release, [...]

Giveaway: A Father/Daughter double feature with Vagabon & Nnamdi Ogbonnaya

It's hard to say "my favorite band off the label Father/Daughter Records is coming to town" because: A lot of my favorite bands off Father/Daughter Records are always in town. The Bay Area is their home and for some it's the only home they know. San Francisco is where most of them live. Many of them only left town when they went on vacation or toured. I don't have a least favorite Father/Daughter band, one of the reasons I love this label so much is because they keep releasing music by my favorites. I wrote about how SOAR was one [...]

Father/Daughter returns with ‘Faux Real II’

Miss Father/Daughter Records' limited-edition Record Store Day release, Faux Real, last year? You're in luck, because this year, they're coming back with a volume two. The track listing for this year's release, Faux Real II, will be different, of course, but the premise remains the same: indie bands covering songs from fictional bands featured in film and television. This year's version comes equipped with songs like Running in the Fog performing "Killer Tofu," Small Wonder doing "Margerine," and Rivergazer covering "Fever Dog." (Brownie points if you can tell us—without Googling—where those songs originate from.) Hear LVL UP's majorly on-point version [...]

The Bay Bridged Presents: A Rock n Roll Holiday Spectacular!

You're probably going to get invitations to a lot of holiday parties as December approaches, but few of them will be as fun as what we've got in store for you in a few weeks. On December 17, we're excited to team up with the terrific BFF.fm and equally terrific Father/Daughter Records for a "Rock n Roll Holiday Spectacular" at Leo's in Oakland. True to its name, the show will feature performances by four great local rock bands. Happy Diving just released Big World, chock full of wonderfully noisy, punk-infused pop. Cocktails released one of our favorite LPs of the [...]

Father/Daughter drops Sadie Dupuis track off RSD covers album

Sadie Dupuis, the spunky leader of Speedy Ortiz, went solo to cover Josie & the Pussycats' "Pretend to be Nice" for local label Father/Daughter's Record Store Day release, Faux Real. The stripped-down, smokier version captures the song's bitter flavor, and the impudent Dupuis is the perfect vessel for the track's message. More tracks from the record include songs adapted from The Muppets, Freaky Friday, The Goofy Movie and more. These will come out April 19 for the official Record Store Day, but move fast—only 500 copies were pressed. Fans of Speedy Ortiz will be able to catch them soon as well. They're playing [...]
