Review: Father John Misty at Sonoma Veterans Hall
Father John Misty keeps ending up on the floor. For the most part, he’s ambling around the stage, leaning on the mic stand and coolly looking down at his feet like he just don’t care. But every so often he snaps out of it, and a twitch of his hips leads to him throwing up his arms in enthusiasm. The chorus swells, he summons up a guttural growl and suddenly he’s dropped to his knees, mic cord draped over him, howling at the ceiling of the Sonoma Veterans Memorial Hall. Anyone who’s seen him live before knows that this is [...]
Review & Photos: Father John Misty creates content at Slim's
Photos by Ted Maier At one point during his Thursday night show at Slim's, Father John Misty sat behind his giant iPhone cutout and declared "When I'm here, I'm content." For much of the first night of his solo "Variety Show" tour, that's pretty much all he did – create content. No one in music today is as good at onstage banter as Misty, and when announcing on Twitter that the tour would include "way more talking," I had hopes that he would, well, talk more. Unfortunately, Misty played a fairly pedestrian set without an unusual amount of [...]
Review: Father John Misty, White Fence @ The Fillmore, 6/21/13
If you've seen Father John Misty three or four times like I have, you may know he has a fiery stage presence and isn't too shy to make sardonic small talk in between songs. What you may not know is that his signature dance moves were suspected to be the result of a medical condition in a letter to his label, Sub Pop. No, really, read this. Medical condition? No. Father John Misty, better known as Josh Tillman, has rather perfected a way to bring his collection of folk-pop songs to life on stage--I guess his gyrating and hip-shaking sometimes [...]
Review & Photos: The Walkmen, Father John Misty @ The Fillmore, 1/24/13
In some ways, pairing The Walkmen with Father John Misty is the perfect bill, as both acts have a similar two-bottles-of-wine flavor to them. From Joshua Tillman’s (aka Father John) gyrating hips, which call to mind a hippie impersonation of Mick Jagger, to Hamilton Leithauser’s comforting drawl, each band brought a level of confidence that invigorated Thursday night’s sold out crowd at The Fillmore. Current indie-folk darlings Father John Misty have found the sweet spot between try-too-hard Americana groups (see: Alabama Mumford Shakes) and the now defunct literary indie rock of bands like The Decemberists. Half the crowd appeared to [...]
The Walkmen announce tour with Father John Misty with 1/24/13 stop at The Fillmore, release live videos & new 7"
The Walkmen recently announced a ten-date tour of North America with Father John Misty, including a gig at The Fillmore here in San Francisco. The Washington, D.C.-native quintet kicks things off with a January 11th show in Philly, where some band members now live, before Father John (the current solo moniker of Joshua Tillman) joins them in Montreal a few days later. The tour arrives at the corner of Fillmore and Geary on January 24th. In addition to the tour announcement, The Walkmen dropped a healthy serving of new live and studio material. They premiered three videos from their June [...]
