Grammy-winning blues artist Fantastic Negrito has announced his latest album, Please Don't Be Dead, out June 15. The Oakland-based musician's newest album comes at a time when discussions of race and the safety of Black and Brown people are not only urgently needed, but, in Xavier Dphrepaulezz's hands, sure to be poignant. “I wrote this album because I fear for the life of my black son,” said the arist. “I fear for the lives of my daughters. Sponsored: Fantastic Negrito pushes back at The UC Theatre this weekend
There are few artists more emblematic of the Oakland music scene than Fantastic Negrito. Rocketed to fame after winning NPR's inaugural Tiny Desk Contest a few years ago, he's finally experiencing well-won success after a lifetime in the industry. Starting by sneaking into UC Berkeley's practice rooms to teach himself piano, he's now a Grammy-holding, internationally-known, Bernie Sanders-backed recording artist. And he's not leaving Oakland. Ever. Never one to appease label-dictated standards of musical decorum, his work covers some of the most pressing social issues Oakland lives under today: namely, the cultural flattening of neighborhoods and the attendant housing insecurity [...]

The Bay Bridged Band-To-Band Relay: Abbot Kinney to Kev Choice
Words by Annie Bacon If you missed it last month, the Band-to-Band Relay is part of The Bay Bridged’s ongoing desire to curate and deepen your awareness of your local music scene. We know you’re oversaturated, and we know how important curators are to our modern musical experience. Who better than the bands you love to point you in the direction of great music being made around you? Each month we’ll start off with a single local artist, write about why we like them, and then ask them to pick and talk about another local artist they dig. We'll carry [...]
