Photos & Recap: Vetiver, tUnE-yArDs, Extra Classic at the Rickshaw Stop, 8/12/11

tUnE-yArDs' culmination of success has been amazing to witness. Merrill Garbus has moved her tribal indie pop act to new levels, as evidenced by Pitchfork-curated church showcases at SxSW to a sold-out show at the Great American to a recent late-night television debut. tUnE-yArDs were announced at the last minute as a "special guest" during Vetiver's Outside Lands night show at the Rickshaw Stop, and suddenly, the dynamic of the show shifted entirely. While a significant crowd remained for the duration of the evening (the musicians of Vetiver, after all, have a certain amount of star power on their own), an [...]

From the Mailbag: Extra Classic, Teen Witch, moonbell, J. Irvin Dally

We get more submissions than we can handle here at TBB, so periodically we'll dip into the mailbag and check out a bunch of songs we've recently received. As always, feel free to let us know your thoughts in the comments. Extra Classic - "Give Them the Same" San Francisco's Extra Classic is led by the duo of Adrianne Verhoeven (who sang and played keyboards in The Anniversary) and songwriter/producer Alex de Landa (who has worked with The Donkeys, Papercuts, and Casiotone For The Painfully Alone). The pair's love of classic Jamaican sounds translated into an all-analog approach for the [...]

Fruit Bats, Citay, Extra Classic @ Slim’s, 1/29

Fruit Bats photo from Flickr user t-dawg Review by Aaron Sankin Under Eric Johnson's porkpie hat sits a head full of deep thoughts. Johnson is the lead singer and creative force behind Fruit Bats, who headlined a solid evening of indie rock at Slim's last Friday night. Fruit Bats called their latest album The Ruminant Band, which suggests a bunch of chin-stroking English majors mulling matters philosophical more than it does people who actually stand on stage and rock. Luckily, while their country-flecked live show is certainly cerebral, the sound is much more muscular than that implies. Front-loading their set [...]
