Ticket Giveaway: Emily Wells, Li Xi at Rickshaw Stop
There are times when it kills me to have to give away tickets to a show instead of using them myself. This is one of those times. Tomorrow night, local psych pop outfit Li Xi is opening for Emily Wells, the sultry songstress who builds her music entirely out of live loops, channeling equal parts hip hop (she once collaborated with Dan the Automator) and classical (she's a classical violinist). To enter for a chance to win tickets to see Emilly Wells and Li Xi at Rickshaw Stop, email contest@thebaybridged.com with “Emily Wells” in the subject line and your full name in [...]
Emily Wells and her sultry looping are hitting Rickshaw Stop
Cancel those tentative Friday night plans because Emily Wells plays Rickshaw Stop. In case you're out of the loop, Wells has warbling and nearly operatic vocals, on-stage sampling, and is a hypnotizing violinist. A few years ago I saw her play in Pillowfight, a collaborative side project with Dan the Automator that they began after they were introduced by Kid Koala. It was my first time seeing the renowned hip-hop artist Dan the Automator and even though I'm a huge fan of Deltron 3030, my focus was entirely on Wells' chillingly genuine performance. Since then she's focused on solo work including an acoustic rendition of her debut album, Mama, while also [...]
Dan the Automator and Emily Wells team up for the most sultry Pillowfight ever
You know Dan the Automator—he of Deltron 3030, Handsome Boy Modeling School, and Gorillaz fame, the guy who produced Dr. Octagonecologyst. Maybe you know Emily Wells, too—her album Mama came out last year and made such an impression that several bands felt compelled to take her songs out for a spin, and the Mama Remixed album was born. But please allow me to introduce you to Pillowfight. In what honestly has to be one of the least expected collaborations in recent memory, Dan the Automator and Emily Wells teamed up and created Pillowfight, a sultry, downtempo affair that shows off [...]
Emily Wells releases free remix LP, playing two Bay Area shows this weekend
Emily Wells released her newest album, Mama, back in April, and it's safe to say it made a solid impression. So much so, in fact, that 13 bands—including Lemonade, Ed Rodriguez of Deerhoof, The Blow, and Dan the Automator—felt compelled to render their own versions of one of the 13 tracks on Mama. And voila: Mama Remixed was born. Fans of weirdo pop along the lines of Joanna Newsom, Grimes or Zola Jesus will find plenty to like on both Mama and Mama Remixed. Better yet, anyone who's ever wondered what it would sound like if Joanna Newsom recorded a [...]
