THEMAYS (members of Exray’s) releases THEWORKS tape

THEMAYS - "High Noon Walker" (TBB Premiere) THEMAYS are self-described as "a loose collective of drone makers and beat junkies," featuring Exray's leaders Jon Bernson and Michael Falsetto-Mapp and a variety of other collaborators, all of whom are affiliated with the Urban Music Program, "an educational utopia for electronic music in the Sunset District of San Francisco." THEWORKS is THEMAYS' second release, a cassette of experimental instrumental hip-hop. The group is celebrating the tape's release at The Knockout on July 18th (8pm, $5), with additional performances by Airbody, Benito and Elephant & Castle, and DJs Cyclyst, B Maj, Beats Me, [...]

Otherness (Man/Miracle, Elephant & Castle) – “Crystalline” and “Salt Water”

Crystalline by Otherness Here are two songs from Otherness, a new project from Dylan Travis (Man/Miracle) and Dave Reep (Elephant & Castle). As one might expect, the sound is a mixture of charismatic vocals and electronic textures, and I'm looking forward to hearing more about/from these guys in the future. Extra points for some great Bandcamp tagging: "tags: cough syrp heavy vibes marley's mello moods oakchester witch-weed-soul-jazz-funk Oakland." (Hat tip to Ears of the Beholder.) Salt Water by Otherness By the way, Man/Miracle and Skeletal System are playing at Amnesia this Saturday night. Details below.

New free EPs from Oakland’s Liquorice Ginsberg and Forest Floor

Local music blog Mapzzz has launched a twice-monthly series of free EPs with the above three-song set from Oakland's Forest Floor. Forest Floor is Geoff Saba, who blends acoustic folk and art pop with electronic beeps and layered noise. According to Mapzzz, Saba's working on an LP to be released later this year. The second release in the free EP series comes from Liquorice Ginsberg, a new project from Oakland's Elephant & Castle and Bazooka Joint. Take a listen to three synthy, stoned instrumentals from them below.

A Bay Area electronic pop mixtape, featuring Blackbird Blackbird, Electric Sunset, oOoOO, and more (Podcast #235)

A Bay Area Electronic Pop Mixtape (Podcast #235) In compiling this mix of new and recent music from eleven San Francisco Bay Area-based artists, I've searched in vain for a singular theory to explain the recent proliferation of local electronic pop. Does the tech-heavy business climate here mean techier indie musicians, geeking out on synth sequencing and effects? Or are the Bay's bedroom pop songwriters employing more electronics as it continues to get easier to manipulate software synths to create satisfying layers of sound? Most likely, there's no single answer to explain the catchy melodies and experimental approaches employed by [...]

Bay Area electronic roundup: new releases from Elephant and Castle, Eskmo, and James & Evander

Man does not (or at least, need not) live by rock and roll alone. Below are selections from three rising local electronic artists with recent or upcoming releases. What's more, all three have shows in the Bay during October. Analogue EP by Elephant and Castle The Analogue EP is the first release from Oakland's Elephant and Castle, who celebrates the EP's release at the Totally Intense Fractal Mind Gaze Hut on October 3rd with White Hinterland and Beep. Musician/engineer David Reep is the man behind the project's glitchy, sample-driven electronic soul. In case he's not busy enough, Reep's also the [...]
