ICEWATER album release show with Eleanor Friedberger at Cafe Du Nord
This Friday may be one of your last chances to catch a great show at San Francisco's historic Cafe Du Nord, as the century-old building faces new ownership and renovations at the end of the month. New York's ICEWATER (not be be confused with Chris Bell's early power pop project or Raekwon's hip-hop collective) is celebrating a bittersweet album release show supporting its debut LP, Collector's Edition. Stream songs from the new release below. Grant Martin, a founding member of ICEWATER, tragically and suddenly passed away in August. Proceeds raised from the show will go to a fund established in [...]
Editors' Picks: What We've Been Listening to This Week (Eleanor Friedberger, Magnetic Fields, GRMLN and more)
Deafheaven (Photo: Randi Sumner) Editors' Picks is a new feature collecting music that we've been enjoying recently. Ben: I'm normally a "the weirder the better" kind of guy, but I'm really digging Eleanor Friedberger's Personal Record. Friedberger's solo songs might sacrifice some of The Fiery Furnaces' weirdness, but her measured indie pop rewards close listening. "When I Knew" is an early highlight, with the singer-songwriter offering a series of colorfully-detailed vignettes tempered by a playful unwillingness to offer the whole story. What's more, the final one actually takes place in the Castro! Friedberger is performing at The Independent with TEEN [...]
Live This Month: February 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #270)
Live This Month: February 2012 (Podcast #270) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. The twentieth installment of the Noise Pop Music Festival takes over a wide variety of local venues later this month -- and we'll be covering many of those shows -- but there are also plenty of pre-NP events worth checking out. Locally, two bands are seeing the release of records for which it feels like we've been waiting forever: the debut LP from ultra-catchy punks Terry Malts, and [...]
Eleanor Friedberger (The Fiery Furnaces) is playing at the Hotel Utah on 7/26/11
If spectators were at all surprised at the choice to host the recent Fiery Furnaces' show at the relatively small Cafe Du Nord, they should be even more surprised to see where one half of the Furnaces, Eleanor Friedberger, will be playing a solo show on July 26th: the rather tiny Hotel Utah (9:00 pm, $10, 21+). Todd's review of the small-scale FF show mentioned that "the Fiery Furnaces stripped down are revealed as a private universe of neurotic genius made public – sort of like the music the twins in Vonnegut’s Slapstick might have made" and that "Eleanor's voice [...]
