Live This Month: October 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #316)

http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/LTM_October_2013.mp3 Download: Live This Month: October 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #316) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. October brings the return of two of our favorite SF festivals: Hardly Strictly Bluegrass and the Treasure Island Music Festival. Both are local traditions that promise quality music offerings, and while we're including bands from both in this episode, the whole episode could have been devoted to the festivals' prospective highlights. Beyond those two, and TIMF's related [...]

Dustin Wong tours with The Dodos in support of new album

Photo: Hiromi Shinada Dustin Wong (a former member of Ponytail) is touring in support of his new album, Mediation of Ecstatic Energy, and will be performing with The Dodos on October 16 at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall. Mediation of Ecstatic Energy, out September 17 via Thrill Jockey, completes Wong's trilogy of guitar-loop albums that started with 2010’s Infinite Love. It is his first record since moving back to Japan, and is the follow-up to Toropical Circle, Wong's collaboration with Japanese singer Takako Minekawa. Thrill Jockey issued a vinyl release of that collaboration in July. Expanding upon the complexity [...]

Just announced: The Mountain Goats to play two solo shows at the Swedish American Hall

John Darnielle just announced a solo tour of the West Coast, with The Mountain Goats making two stops at the Swedish American Hall on June 27 and 28 (8pm, $25, All Ages). I caught the TMG solo show at the Swedish during Noise Pop several years back, and it was one of the best concerts I've ever attended. The venue is exactly the right size for a great intimate performance, meaning that both shows will sell out quickly. The icing on the cake: Dustin Wong (of whom we are big fans) opens both nights. Tickets for both shows are on [...]

My favorite show of SXSW 2012: Dustin Wong – playing tonight at Hemlock!

Every year, my favorite show from SXSW is a show I didn't plan on seeing. That's what's really magical about the annual clusterfuck/music festival in Austin, TX: There are so many bands playing — everywhere you go — that you can't help but catch sets by numerous bands you've never even heard of. And, invariably, it's one of those bands who totally blow me away every year. This year it was Dustin Wong, formerly of Ponytail but now a solo artist with two albums out on Thrill Jockey. Sure, I caught sets by Youth Lagoon, Grimes, Coasting, White Fence, Schoolboy [...]

Tonight: Dustin Wong (of Ponytail), Woodsman, Moonbell @ Hemlock Tavern

We've been waiting all month for tonight's Dustin Wong (ex-Ponytail) show at the Hemlock with Woodsman (CO) and local opener, the dream-gazey Moonbell (9pm, $7). Dustin Wong released his second album this February on ThrillJockey (Dreams Say, View, Create, Shadow Leads), and it's an ultimately shiny, technical record with hundreds of loops and ambient sounds structured in. We heard great things about his live performances out at SxSW this year, and for those that missed out tonight is the chance to see Wong, as his tour continues with Woodsman (tour dates after the jump). It's always interesting to hear about [...]

Live This Month: March 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #274)

Live This Month: March 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #274) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. The annual insanity of South by Southwest means that a ton of artists are touring right now, and plenty of performers will be in SF in March en route to or returning from Austin. But while most of the acts included in this episode will be doing one or a dozen shows in bars and parking lots around the [...]
