Outside Lands 2014: Your Guide to SF’s Biggest Summer Musical Experience
Outside Lands 2014 show poster (DKNG Studios) It's that time of year again – the yearning masses will descend upon San Francisco this weekend for the City's now hallmark summer musical experience Outside Lands. Yep, the seventh edition of the gigantic gig in Golden Gate Park kicks off Friday at noon and, as you've undoubtedly learned by now, it will be headlined by none other than Kanye, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, and The Killers. Headliners can be hit-or-miss, but the strength of Outside Lands (or any festival, for that matter) typically lies in the undercard. Sure, you may get [...]

One of those shows features Blood Orange, the latest project of Devonté Hynes. As a writer/producer, Hynes has worked with the [...]
Review & Photos: Bloc Party, Dum Dum Girls @ Fox Theater, 12/6/12
Seven years after the release of their excellent debut album Silent Alarm, the crafty, angular British rock of Bloc Party continues to waffle between potent, post-punk influenced modern rock and muddy, atonal throwaway tracks. Playing the Fox Theater on Thursday night to celebrate the release of their fourth LP, Four, the group fought to both stay relevant and to move forward, pulling heavily from Silent Alarm and Four. Lead singer Kele Okereke was in high spirits, bantering with the crowd about marijuana smoke, sing-alongs, and the band’s long term absense from Oakland (a half-truth: Bloc Party played Outside Lands this [...]

Live This Month: December 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #294)
Live This Month: December 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #294) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. Few new albums and winter conditions mean that there's a seasonal dip in the number of bands hitting the road and coming to town in December. A dip, however, doesn't mean that there aren't noteworthy highlights, including the return of former locals Moon Duo, whose latest LP, Circles, came out earlier this year. As luck would have it, Moon [...]

Review & Photos: Dum Dum Girls, Young Prisms, SISU @ The Blank Club, S.J., 5/21/12
Though this blogger is too green to remember, he feels safe enough to say San Jose has been starving for a great club scene since the Cactus Club went under (back in 2002, according to that one site you aren't supposed to cite). So when a band on Sub Pop rolls through town — even on a Monday — people find a way to go. And go they did. To see the Dum Dum Girls, at The Blank Club, May 21. Though shows at the Blank don't start until after 9 p.m. the crowd didn't seem to care one lick about [...]

Dum Dum Girls – “Bedroom Eyes”
Dum Dum Girls - Bedroom Eyes "Bedroom Eyes" suggests a cleaner sound for Dum Dum Girls on Only in Dreams, the band's second full length, out September 27th on Sub Pop. The song feels a few decades ahead of the girl group sound I'd previously associated with the band, and it's a catchy expression of longing for a far away love. Dum Dum Girls are at the Great American Music Hall on October 4th with Crocodiles and Colleen Green.
