DRMS releases ‘American 707’ Film and soundtrack

Photo: Ginger Fierstien I'm a big fan of musicians that take their art into other realms beyond a basic music video. Oakland's DRMS did just that with their release of American 707, an ambitious 17-minute film and soundtrack directed by Elia Vargas. DRMS keyboardist Rob Shelton tells me the project began with some "highly experimental recording sessions" in 2012. "These sessions left us with a lot of material to use in a new way, not so much as writing a song and recording it, but recording something and then writing the song." The end result is an incredibly cool mixture [...]

Mixtape: The Orchestral Side of San Francisco Indie Rock (Podcast #317)

Adding strings, horns or woodwinds might seem pretentious to some -- and, admittedly, genre names like "chamber rock" and "orchestral pop" probably don't help that assessment -- but, when used deftly, these instruments can heighten a song's emotion, add weight to dynamic shifts, and provide layers of texture that generate wonderfully unexpected moments. String and [...]

It's the band's first professionally recorded album, as well as their first as a full band. You can stream six of the tracks from Hola on Bandcamp, and we really enjoy what we've heard so far. San Francisco's DRMS (formerly known as Dreams) are releasing their debut full-length album at a record release show on July 28th at the Rickshaw Stop, performing with support from The Shotgun Wedding Quintet and St. Tropez.
