Anna Hillburg (of Dreamdate) releases solo debut

Anna Hillburg of Dreamdate just released her solo debut on California Clap Records. In addition to her work with Dreamdate, Hillburg's also a classically trained trumpet player who you've likely heard on albums by The Dodos and The Fresh & Onlys. But back to Anna's new solo album: recorded with Greg Ashley, the record's full of warm singer-songwriter pop, and you can stream it in its entirety below. ANNA HILLBURG by Anna Hillburg

Review & Photos: Friday Night Freak Fest — Michael Hurley, Avengers and the return of the Ghost Town Gallery, 5/25/12

Michael Hurley played the Great American Music Hall on Friday night opening for Cass McCombs. Hurley aka Snock is truly one of a kind. His First Songs came out in 1965 on Folkways, and he joined the Holy Modal Rounders for the ultimate party record Have Moicy! in 1976. Snock captivated the crowd with tales of Jocko jacking off too much and then brought out the achingly beautiful "O My Stars" from 1980's Snockgrass. A lot of these long lost records have been re-released (a few on Portland's primo Mississippi label). Do check them out. There are a bunch at [...]

Live This Month: September 2011 – an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #256)

Live This Month: September 2011 (Podcast #256) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. Two big local-focused events top this month's calendar. First, we're pleased to be co-producing the free, all ages 2011 Rock Make Street Festival, taking place on September 17th at Treat Avenue and 18th Street in the Mission District. Additionally, the Mission Creek Music Festival returns to SF and Oakland for its fifteenth installment this month. Beyond those fests, the September concert calendar seems heavy on out-of-town acts playing [...]

Song Premiere: Dreamdate – “Pyramids”; new album out now, release show 3/31/11

Dreamdate - "Pyramids" We've long loved SF's Dreamdate, a trio with a knack for a winning jangle that's equal parts garage and indie pop. Melody Walk is the band's new third album, which was recorded by Greg Ashley, and is out now on Tic Tac Totally. Throughout the record, it's easy to be sucked in by the great vocal melodies and harmonies, and a sense of immediacy abounds on tracks like "Pyramids," posted above. Dreamdate headlines their record release show on Thursday, March 31st at The Knockout (9pm, $6), with The Touch-Me-Nots, Elvis Christ and DJ Full Moon Fever (Hitforce).

5/9: Dreamdate record release @ the Knockout

Forever ago, Dreamdate played a show in downtown Davis which satisfied the audience so deeply that an encore was demanded. As bashful and charming as possible did the girls admit they knew only one more song: The Monster Mash, a CD single they released in 2006. And they played it, like good sports, but now crowds need not worry -- there's enough Dreamdate songs to last a couple hours! The record release party for their latest release, Patience, at the Knockout this Saturday with fellow Oaklanders The Pets, The Splinters and guest DJs is only the beginning of a string [...]
