TBB Premiere: Doombird – "Gottlieb"

We're very happy to premiere the latest track from Sacramento's Doombird, "Gottlieb" It appears on the Cygnus EP, out today on Oakland-based label Eightmaps Records (owned by Mike Sempert of Birds & Batteries).   Kris Anaya and Joseph Davancens are Doombird's core, composing space-age electronic pop with live drums that's evolved from the former, slightly more folky days of Doombird I recall from seeing them perform at Sea of Bees' release party at the Townhouse in Sacramento with John Vanderslice. The direction of Cygnus is described as " [setting] fragmented first-person narratives of the lives of composers of [...]

Wood Shoppe celebrates one year of free local music on 2/5/13

Wood Shoppe, Brick and Mortar’s free monthly music series dedicated to exposing locals to emerging Bay Area artists, is celebrating its one-year anniversary with a party on Tuesday, February 5th. Dream pop duo Painted Palms (who will release their forthcoming 7” Carousel on March 5th) are headlining, with support from YALLS and Doom Bird, as well as a very special guest that is to be announced. The party will open with DJ sets from Ears of the Beholder and Woodshoppe’s own Wilson Zheng. As one of the only monthly parties in the city that offers a wide variety of local [...]

Beyond the Bay Area: A Sacramento Mixtape (Podcast #297)

Beyond the Bay Area: A Sacramento Mixtape (Podcast #297) It's not technically part of the Bay Area -- and by "technically," of course, we mean "at all" -- but we've been known to cheat a little bit and claim a good number of Sacramento bands as adopted locals over the years. Can you really blame us? Plenty of acts from the state's capital have made an big impact on independent music, including Death Grips, Chelsea Wolfe, and Trash Talk. All three of those groups eventually migrated to Los Angeles, with Death Grips leaking their latest album during a two-month stay [...]

Birds & Batteries to play final show for indefinite period on 11/16/12

Sad news from the Birds & Batteries camp recently: with two members leaving, the band's upcoming show this Friday, November 16th, is now their final show with the current lineup and the final B&B show for the near future. On the positive front, bandleader Mike Sempert promises that he's working on plenty of new music, and let's hope Birds & Batteries will return at some point too. In any event, the band is playing on Friday with DOOMbird and DJ oWNERSHIP at 1772 Market Street (formerly Rebel). The show starts at 9pm, and the extremely tasty Sneaky's BBQ will be [...]

The Definite Articles performs as a 14-piece for two record release shows

The Definite Articles is a band of appreciable size and aspiration; they spent three years putting together King Merriweather, which they will perform in its entirety tonight and tomorrow at the found venue of a Presbyterian church (32 Ocean at Mission). Each night includes a different Sacramento-based folk rock supporting act -- understandable, for the headliners transplanted from that area down to the Bay Area just a few years ago. Friday's will be DoomBIRD and Saturday's is Sea of Bees. And if you show up Saturday, you'll be surprised with a guest performance (my lips are sealed). The Definite Articles [...]
