Review: DonCat and Split Screens dual vinyl release party at Bottom of the Hill

Saturday night at Bottom of the Hill laid claim to an all San Francisco based line-up, and two very exciting vinyl releases. Split Screens released The Sinner, a 7-inch that is leading up to a debut LP due this summer titled Before The Storm. Headliner DonCat (Duncan Nielsen) released his debut LP amusingly titled Don Gato, which was made a crowdfunding reality through fans / friends / family. First on the stage was Scary Little Friends, a musical powerhouse embodying California's easy-going yet earnestly idealistic personality. Fusing Americana and pop hooks, frontman Chris Jones belted out songs from their full-length [...]

Doncat releases ‘Don Gato’ vinyl at Bottom of the Hill

San Francisco's Doncat took my favorite approach to crowdfunding this year to fund pressing of his vinyl LP, Don Gato. He decided he was making an album no matter what, and if enough of you paid for it, he'd give you vinyl. No begging, no awkward video explaining his creative process - he just released songs you could buy. The good news is that the strategy was a success, and about 120 folks are now lucky owners of Doncat crooning through their speakers on some sweet coke-bottle transparent vinyl. For the rest of you, there's still about 20 copies left [...]

A guide to an interesting and cheap Saturday night in Oakland

There's always a ton of great music going on in Oakland, but Saturday night presents a somewhat unique opportunity to see no less than five different artists previously featured on The Bay Bridged at three different venues within walking distance of each other while spending less than ten dollars total to get through the doors. What fun! To kick off your evening, swing by the Rock Paper Scissors Collective on Telegraph for a combination art exhibition closing and musical performance. Casey Chisholm's loneriffic bummer pop would be the highlight for me. Chisholm recently raised a nice amount of money for [...]

Premiere: DonCat – "Like a Drug"

San Francisco's DonCat, the solo project of Duncan Nielsen, has taken a unique approach to fundraising that we told you about shortly after he launched it. He's consistently released a song per month, and today we're pleased to present the eighth single of the project, "Like a Drug". Like all DonCat releases, Nielsen's voice is on point, and the '70s ballad vibe combined with a great guitar solo from Nielsen make this one of my favorites from his collection. Vinyl Cake 2013 by DonCat Nielsen tells me he's about halfway to raising enough money to press vinyl, and he expects [...]

DonCat – "Ride On"

DonCat, the solo project of Duncan Nielsen, is taking a bit of a unique approach to crowd funding for his first album. From his website: In this brave year of 2013, I will be releasing one song per month. Every song will be available as a free downloadable treat and will be accompanied by a lovely piece of high-craft artwork by a friend and artist in the San Francisco bay area community. Although these songs will be free, donations are highly encouraged. This is why: Each person that donates $20 or more at any time during the year will receive, [...]
