“The Good Times Roll” with DONCAT

At a time of unprecedented change and uncertainty, San Francisco-based songwriter and performer Duncan Nielsen of DONCAT brings us a sunny new single titled "The Good Times Roll" to uplift our spirits. While DONCAT has been writing and performing since 2012, he had balanced multiple gigs before focusing on his solo act, including one as guitarist, vocalist, and keyboard player of Geographer. "The Good Times Roll" is a deviation from the style in his last album release Preservation of the Spirit, which features Nielsen's sultry vocals, reminiscent of a full-bodied Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes, on the backdrop of electrifying guitar riffs. In [...]

DonCat on old souls, saxophones, and ‘Kind of Love’

Words by Sarah Leighton In talking to Duncan Nielsen — known as DonCat to the Bay Area music scene — about his recently-debuted EP, Kind of Love, it becomes incredibly clear that the introspective, introverted style of the lyrics and chill folk sound that comes through in the six songs that make up the EP are not just his musical persona, but rather a true expression of who he is as a person. Duncan is, and has always been, a loving old soul with unparalleled wisdom and outlook. “When I was in 6th grade, there was a talent show and [...]

Giveaway: DonCat’s Year-Ender Bender to hit Milk Bar

DonCat, aka Duncan Nielsen, aka San Francisco's sultan of soul-drenched folk, first lassoed our attention with the 2014 debut, Don Gato. His sound carried the air of a dusty Lone Ranger-type that had had his heart broken once or twice, but forged ahead. Even still, the rebellious must hang up their boots, and as the 2016 follow-up, Easy Cowboy, suggests, our wayward son has softened up just enough to let that special lady know he still cares. https://soundcloud.com/doncatmusic/la-in-84 As the tense and stressful year nears its end, we are more ready than ever to let the good times prevail. Mixtape: Spotlight on San Francisco Singer-Songwriters

http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/SF_Songwriters_2015_Mix.mp3 Download: Mixtape: Spotlight on San Francisco Singer-Songwriters (Podcast #361) It's not entirely clear why a remarkable new wave of singer-songwriters has begun to emerge in the San Francisco Bay Area recently, but we certainly aren't complaining. Other genres may fall more in and out of vogue, but a wide array of local songwriting talents influenced by folk, rock, blues, pop, and psych are performing regularly in places like Viracocha, Doc's Lab, and The Chapel, and banding together for showcases like the Fog City Songwriters series of quarterly events. While veteran performers like Lia Rose and The Sam Chase regularly [...]

Interview: DonCat records cruising vibes on sophomore album, Easy Cowboy

Let me introduce you to Duncan Nielsen. He's the sweet, affable guy who sings and plays guitar in local indie-folk band City Tribe, while also nurturing his own personal project, DonCat. Especially when live with a backing band, DonCat is emotionally enveloping with a heart-wrenching Western twinge. On bass guitar is Chris Sugiura, who also engineered Doncat's first album, Don Gato. Shaun Lowecki commands the drums and is also a member of local outfit Painted Palms. Next up is a sophomore album currently being recorded and expectantly entitled Easy Cowboy. You can find them at their last show before the [...]
