Mixtape: 2015 Highlights from San Francisco Bay Area Indie Music

http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/2015_Highlights_Mix.mp3 Download: Mixtape: 2015 Highlights from San Francisco Bay Area Indie Music (Podcast #377) At The Bay Bridged, we always bristle a little at the prospect of attempting to sum up a full year of the local independent music scene in a single retrospective podcast mixtape. Such a challenge is especially difficult in a place like the Bay Area, where year in, year out, a wide variety of talented local musicians release compelling and impressive albums, a great many of which gain acclaim well beyond the Bay's borders. Instead of trying to identify some objective list of the "ten best" [...]

Dirty Ghosts premiere “Moving Pictures,” new album to be released on Last Gang

Dirty Ghosts (Photo: Liz Caruana) Allyson Baker has certainly been busy since the release of her band Dirty Ghosts' debut record Metal Moon. Though her marriage with San Francisco-based MC/producer Aesop Rock dissolved, she provided backing vocals to a !!! song, collaborated with SF local Kelley Stoltz on a couple of his upcoming records, and even released a Dirty Ghosts EP earlier this summer, Cataracts. And now, her and the now-solidified Dirty Ghosts crew is putting out their long-awaited sophomore record Let It Pretend on October 2, courtesy of Last Gang Records. They've been working on this record since 2012, and since then, they've gone through a few [...]

Live This Month: August 2015 — an audio guide to upcoming SF concerts

http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/LTM_August_2015.mp3 Download: Live This Month: August 2015 (Podcast #368) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Outside Lands Festival is without a doubt the biggest local music event this month, and with good reason, given a well-curated mix of big names and bands-on-the-rise appearing over three days in Golden Gate Park. Whether you're Outside Lands-bound or not, however, there are plenty of other compelling concerts this month, including a slew of shows celebrating new releases from local bands. Dirty Ghosts' new [...]

Review & Photos: The Thermals, Dirty Ghosts, The SHE’S, Ev Kain @ Rickshaw Stop 3/1/13 (Noise Pop 2013)

Friday’s Noise Pop show at The Rickshaw did not disappoint. From the angular math rock of EV Kain to the Sunny, crystalline pop of The SHE'S, this lineup fell on many pleased ears. EV Kain opened the evening with complicated time signatures and hypnotic drumming while guitarist Brian Belier and drummer Jon Sortland’s vocal harmonies completed the sound -- a heavy reggae-Police vibe, with maybe a touch of AnCo-style psychedelia. The festival tended to name-drop Hella when referring to this band (bassist Jonathan Hischke was a member) but these guys won’t require such prefacing for long. The SHE’S formed when [...]

Mixtape: Twelve Highlights from 2012 (Podcast #295)

Mixtape: Twelve Highlights from 2012 (Podcast #295) "Best of" lists are intrinsically a tricky proposition, but compiling them is made all the more difficult by the San Francisco Bay Area's rich pool of local musical talent. This mixtape compiles twelve of our favorite local performers from this year, all of whom had big years in their respective genres. Limiting the list to twelve meant that a lot of talented folks were left off, but this mix offers a nice sampling of some of the best that 2012 had to offer. Subscribe to The Bay Bridged Podcast! About the bands: Ty [...]

Treasure Island Interview: Dirty Ghosts hit their stride, begin working on new album

Allyson Baker may have black hair, play guitar and wear leather jackets and black clothes, but she doesn’t own any Joan Jett albums. Instead, she looks for inspiration to albums like Captain Beefheart’s Mirror Man, Chrome’s Red Exposure and Duran Duran’s self-titled debut. The San Francisco resident wants to make an album that people will listen to over and over – like those albums that inspire her. Yet her band, Dirty Ghosts, is often compared to Jett. “I think that it’s easy for people to look at me, and say, ‘She’s short, she has dark hair and plays guitar, and [...]
