The sheer number of options blanketing the Texas capital during the festival can be overwhelming, but it remains one of the premier places to discover new and emerging bands. That's the view from a music fan's perspective, mind you. For a musician, the degree to which South by Southwest performances might [...]

Joyous Defiance: Diet Cig to perform at Bottom of the Hill

Diet Cig (photo: Dojozine) One of the fastest growing sectors of indie-rock in recent years is music by young adults capturing the tension of what it feels like to be a young adult. Early 20-somethings are writing, producing, and performing some of the most exciting music to come out of growing incubators in Brooklyn, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. These musicians are giving voice to struggles with insurmountable expectations (both internal and external), intimate commitment, mental illness, and intersectionality — concerns that prove increasingly daunting as you enter the age in which your eyes are most heavily focused on yourself. It's a Monday, so you're probably feeling the requisite weekend withdrawals. We have the perfect pick-me-up that'll give your day a proper injection of cuteness and wanderlust: Diet Cig's brand new video for their single, "Sleep Talk." Diet Cig play Hemlock Tavern tomorrow night

I am not going to be in SF this weekend. I am not going to be in the Bay Area (been repeating this in my head for the past week). So I am not going to be able to see Diet Cig, a current favorite New Paltz, N.Y. based band of mine, perform at Hemlock Tavern. I am really upset about this. Diet Cig is one of the cutest bands as of now, using sweet vocals that mix cynical and nostalgic lyrics to create music that anyone can shimmy too. Their lyrics reflect the social anxiety with relationships, how life [...]

Diet Cig signs to Father/Daughter, will release album this month

Diet Cig has only released a couple tracks thus far—"Scene Sick" and "Harvard" (below)—but the New Paltz, New York duo made up of Alex Luciana and Noah Bowman is already making waves with their bedroom-made pop. After signing with local label Father/Daughter, the band will release a new EP on February 24, Over Easy, featuring five angsty tracks that manage to be biting and a little bit gritty without losing any charm. "Fuck your Ivy League sweater," Luciano sings. "You know I was better." The band only formed last summer and recorded their EP on Halloween, so don't expect to see [...]
