Mixtape: The Ones That Got Away (Podcast #255)

This episode is sponsored by BottleRockIt. Mixtape: The Ones That Got Away (Podcast #255) Our recent Regional Bias fundraiser concert featured the final local performance by Royal Baths before the band relocates to the East Coast, a fact that got us thinking about the many active artists who have left the Bay Area for other pastures in recent years. As an organization founded to champion local music, we focus on bands while they live here, but there's always a lingering feeling that great bands that depart are "the ones that got away." This podcast is a mix featuring thirteen bands [...]

Video: Deerhoof – “The Merry Barracks”

Via Pitchfork, here's the latest video from Deerhoof, which takes my favorite song on the band's new album, Deerhoof vs. Evil, and gives it a black and white visual accompaniment full of explosions. Pfork reports that the band has a couple of new releases coming out on Record Store Day, including a 7" split with Xiu Xiu and a reissue of Friend Opportunity with bonus tracks. Review & Photos: Deerhoof, Ben Butler & Mousepad, Fred Frith & Phillip Greenlief @ Great American Music Hall, 1/28/11

Photos by Charlie Homo It would be hard to overstate Deerhoof's accomplishments during their ten-plus year run. The numbers alone are exceptional: nine albums, two EPs, countless singles, collaborations, and two tribute albums. What puts them in such a rare category, however, is the music they have churned out with such apparent ease. Deerhoof - Behold a Marvel in the Darkness by Polyvinyl Records Virtually no band since Sonic Youth has so mastered the art of pairing experimentalism with pop craft, heady ideas with visceral rock and roll. What other art rock, nerd rock or whatever rock bands like Dirty [...]

Video: Deerhoof well costumed for “Super Duper Rescue Heads!”

The video for "Super Duper Rescue Heads!" the first made from Deerhoof's forthcoming Deerhoof vs. Evil (Polyvinyl), just goes to show that this band will go to relentlessly creative extremes to keep us intrigued. Enjoy no less than glitz and glam from Satomi Matsuzaki in this big production-style piece (via Pitchfork TV). In other exciting news, tickets are still available for Deerhoof's show at the Great American Music Hall on January 28, just after the record hits US stores.
