Live This Month: May 2016 — an audio guide to upcoming SF concerts Download: Live This Month: May 2016 (Podcast #385) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. Plenty of younger bands populate this month's set of concert picks, but May's highlights include a significant number of indie veterans. Take the Atlanta trio pictured above, The Coathangers, whose fifth album may be the group's best yet. Local vets Rogue Wave returned last month after a three year break between records with their sixth LP, Delusions of Grand Fur, while the new LP from former [...]

Nicholas Schneider’s best musical moments of 2015

Where the hell did this year go? I’m sure we all say this by the time Christmas rolls around, rearing its pimply, red-and-green-splotched face, reminding us to stimulate the economy by buying stuff that’s just gonna end up in a trash can or forgotten on some already over-cluttered shelf by this time next year. But, all ranting aside, this year did zip by particularly fast for me. Entering my first year of grad school, there were many late-night seminars that found me physically exhausted from a weekend of shows, struggling to dissect the deeper themes inherent in Melville’s short stories [...]

Travis Hayes to share the stage with Curious Quail and Bonnie & the BANG BANG at Great American

Picked out a show for Saturday night yet? If you haven't, here's the perfect suggestion, and if you have, re-consider your options. Bourgeois Productions is bringing you one ecstatic and eclectic lineup that covers the spectrum of genres you could hope to experience in a single evening at the Great American Music Hall. There's the heartfelt folk of Travis Hayes and the Young Daze; the oddball brilliance of San Jose-based chamber pop outfit Curious Quail; and the alt-rock insanity of Bonnie and the BANG BANG. Hear that sound? That's you re-considering your options. [bandcamp width=100% height=120 track=1167381485 size=large bgcol=ffffff [...]

Curious Quail, Rin Tin Tiger, Picture Atlantic play Art Boutiki

After eight months of tireless work, Curious Quail's Kickstarter-success-story of a record, After the Lights Failed, is finally ready to be unleashed on the public. This Friday, they'll host a release party at the Art Boutiki in their hometown of San Jose, and have invited a whole mess of friends to party with them (that includes you). After raising over $10,000 through the crowdfunding site, Curious Quail put together Lights, a true labor of love by the San Jose band. Though they (proudly) identify as a San Jose band, the night will be truly about the Bay Area music scene [...]

Festival Preview: Rockage 3.0 in San Jose, February 7-9

Now in its third year, Rockage will be once again taking over downtown San Jose for a weekend in February. This year, it's rocking some roomier digs — the three-day celebration of gaming and rock 'n' roll has graduated to the Student Union at San Jose State. This year's lineup brings back favorites like Gnarboots, The Albert Square and Curious Quail, alongside a couple of first-timers. This year's lineup has more of a focus on strict chiptune than in years past, featuring major names within the chip community like Danimal Cannon and Bit Brigade. Games are yet to be confirmed, [...]

Who to See at C2SV

Are you ready, South Bay? Thursday marks the kickoff of C2SV, San Jose’s first real music festival in recent memory. In no particular order, here are our picks for best bets at what we hope will be the first of many C2SVs to come. Brother Grand, Saturday,September 28th, 9pm, Agenda Ben Henderson, and the many projects he’s taken part in, is a little bit of a legend around San Jose. His latest [...]

Ticket Giveaway: Father President, Curious Quail, Sunrunners @ Bottom of the Hill 8/23/13

Hey you. Yeah, you. How much do you love indie pop? (you’re reading The Bay Bridged, so I’m going to assume your answer is somewhere around 'a lot'.) Second question: How much do you love free stuff? (You’re a human, so again I’m going to guess 'a lot'.) Last question: What are you doing Friday night? SF’s Sunrunners and Father President are joining forces with San Jose’s Curious Quail (who have done a little bit of downsizing recently, but will be no less busy in the coming months) at Bottom of the Hill this Friday. A full lineup of upbeat, [...]
