Coo Coo Birds play all-local show at GAMH this Saturday

Though different in sound, all bands share at least one common denominator - they’re local San Franciscans. Not to mention that the [...]

Psychedelia will be most certainly not be in short supply March 26 when Bay Area psych soul act Down Dirty Shake teams up with SF-based purveyors of frenetic acid rock the Coo Coo Birds for what is sure to be one tripped out evening at Slim's. This is actually the first in a slew of Bay Area and Fresno shows over the next few months for Down Dirty Shake, which released a three-track EP The Beauville Boogie back in January. The band's five members – A.J. Lopez, Kyle De Martini, James Langarica, Aaron Grimes, and Joe Putnam – formed the [...]

Watch Coo Coo Birds' new video for "Mariposa Venenosa"
On the eve of the release of their sophomore album Psychedelic Warrior (due out on Halloween), San Francisco's Coo Coo Birds have a new video for “Mariposa Venenosa”, a track from the band's 2012 debut album “Don't Bring Your Boyfriends”. The release of the video is in celebration of the Coo Coo Birds' agreement to feature the song in an upcoming commercial for GoPro, the San Mateo-based maker of on-the-go cameras. No word yet from Johnny, Charles, and Zweng on when to expect an official single release of "Black Blue Jeans", the Psychedelic Warrior track that features sax work from [...]

Ticket Giveaway: Coo Coo Birds open for White Denim at The Independent
SF's own Coo Coo Birds keep climbing up the rock and roll food chain, self-releasing a solid debut LP, recording their sophomore effort with cameos from the likes of Steve Mackay (of The Stooges fame), opening for Jonathan Richman at Great American, staging a raucous psychedelic bus tour through SXSW, and recording yet another album at Ardent Studios in Memphis – all in the span of the last year. Now they've secured an opening spot for White Denim's July 6 gig at The Independent, and we've got two pairs of tickets to give away to couple lucky readers. Last Fall, [...]
Mixtape: San Francisco's Newest Psychedelic Sounds (Podcast #306)
Mixtape: San Francisco's Newest Psychedelic Sounds (Podcast #306) It's almost 18 months since we last did a psych-focused mixtape, which means there's quite a bit to catch up on. The Bay continues to be a vital source for top-notch mind-expanding bands, whether it's the heady drones of Carlton Melton and Date Palms, or the swaggering rock of Glitter Wizard and Coo Coo Birds. Several of the groups included here have new records either out now or coming out soon. Prolific instrumental duo Barn Owl just released its fifth album, V, on Thrill Jockey; meanwhile, cosmic rock group Lumerians is serving [...]
Coo Coo Birds stage rock 'n' roll road trip to SXSW
If there’s one thing Coo Coo Birds is serious about, it’s bringing the balls back to rock ‘n’ roll. “It’s gotta have attitude. It’s gotta have balls,” says drummer Ryan Zweng, over a cup of Maiden's Ecstasy at Samovar Tea Lounge on Page. “Unless parents are afraid, we’re not pushing the envelope enough.” Parents – their parents in particular – should be afraid of some of the things Coo Coo Birds have in store for the next few months: namely, an action-packed rock ’n’ roll road trip to South by Southwest, where they plan to slay Austin with guerilla bus [...]
