Cocktails perform at Rickshaw ahead of EU tour and vinyl release

Some of our favorite local pop-rockers, Cocktails, have laid pretty low since the release of their second full-length, Hypochondriac, but not for much longer. Tonight, Cocktails opens for NE-HI at the Rickshaw before heading across the pond for a tour of Europe in May. As it turns out, one of the bookers for a recent Apache/BT's European tour is perhaps a huge Cocktails fan who actually saw them perform at SXSW(!) several years ago. Through the Apache folks, he got in touch with Cocktails and set up 13 shows in 14 nights for them. If you're on holiday and want [...]

Mixtape: New Releases from Some of the Bay Area’s Best Record Labels Download: Mixtape: New Releases from Some of the Bay Area's Best Record Labels (Podcast #393) Support for this podcast is provided by Goldstar. Visit their web site at The post first ran on A record label may not be a necessity for a musician in 2016, considering the remarkable ease with which anyone can record an album and put it out into the world, and its benefits may not be obvious to some, given the precarious state of the music industry as a whole. Still, amidst the sea of countless new releases every week, there's undeniable value [...]

Premiere: Cocktails announce new record, share title track

It's been two years since Cocktails ' last major release, but that doesn't mean that they just disappeared from the Bay Area music scene all together. Oh no: Not only have they been playing shows all over the city, we at The Bay Bridged have been waiting patiently to able to listen to what they have been working on. The wait is almost over, and on July 8 (the day before Phono Del Sol, by the way) Cocktails' new album Hypochondriac will be out to the world via Father/Daughter Records (click to go preorder).  The band recorded the new album at John [...]

Playlist: Cocktails yearn for the summer

We've been big fans of Cocktails here at the Bay Bridged for a long time. Their most recent LP on Father/Daughter, Adult Life, was a wonderful album full of catchy songs about growing into an adult in San Francisco that just felt like the right. Needless to say, we couldn't be more pleased that Cocktails is joining the bill for our upcoming show at Slim's with WATERS and GRMLN this Friday night. Cocktails has wrapped up recording at Tiny Telephone for their follow up to Adult Life, which should be out this summer. While we anxiously await new material, I [...]

The Bay on Bowie: Bay Area bands memorialize the iconic cultural hero

Our beloved Starman has passed on, and as the news has sunk deep into our hearts and minds, we at The Bay Bridged are giving a space for some of our favorite local bands and musicians to dedicate their David Bowie tributes, however they wish to honor him. The consensus, if we could ever come to one? It's quite hard to distill years of Bowie memories into words; many had their sexual awakenings to Bowie's package in Labyrinth; and so many parts of his body of work had a profound impact on people. Read their poignant words below. Derek Barber, Perhapsy/Bells [...]

Best of 2015: Joel of Talkies, Cocktails, and DSTVV on shows at the White Horse

The World at White Horse I always hated the uncritical punk mantra that commands "support the scene". As if "the scene" was some monolithic, benevolent sanctuary where a progressive community of cast-off weirdos, and, oh yeah, enlightened alt-music, was nourished — as opposed to being another hierarchical, careerist social club that, yes, occasionally produced enlightened alt-music and allowed otherwise hopeless misfits to thrive. That said, going to Saturday shows in the ramshackle back room of Oakland's WhiteHorse makes the dubious task of supporting your local scene a lot more palatable. The drinks are cheap. The regulars are friendly. Shows start [...]

Mixtape: 2014 San Francisco Bay Area Musical Highlights Download: Mixtape: 2014 San Francisco Bay Area Musical Highlights (Podcast #353) In 2014, Bay Area artists released a wealth of great records, with highlights coming in an array of genres: garage pop, indie rock, electronic pop, and hip hop. The year brought new acclaim to ascendant locals like tUnE-yArDs and Tycho, the latter of whom just released a deluxe version of his stellar 2014 album, Awake. Also on the rise are The Family Crest, who grabbed well-deserved NPR attention for the band's sophomore LP, Beneath the Brine.
