Mixtape: The Ones That Got Away (Podcast #255)

This episode is sponsored by BottleRockIt. Mixtape: The Ones That Got Away (Podcast #255) Our recent Regional Bias fundraiser concert featured the final local performance by Royal Baths before the band relocates to the East Coast, a fact that got us thinking about the many active artists who have left the Bay Area for other pastures in recent years. As an organization founded to champion local music, we focus on bands while they live here, but there's always a lingering feeling that great bands that depart are "the ones that got away." This podcast is a mix featuring thirteen bands [...]

Noise Pop 2010: Citay, Scout Niblett, Greg Ashley, Tape Deck Mountain @ Cafe du Nord

Photos by: Nicole Browner Tape Deck Mountain - "Scantrons" As I walked up Market Street to Cafe du Nord, I could hear these brooding tunes emanating from underground and couldn't help but think how perfectly the music of Tape Deck Mountain fit with the almost vampiric ambiance of du Nord's crimson-soaked lighting and walls. While it was the brooding tunes I heard on my way in, TDM switched things up a bit in their set, playing a few tracks off their Scantrons 7". Things really got kicked up a notch for these songs and showed the brilliance of [...]

Fruit Bats, Citay, Extra Classic @ Slim’s, 1/29

Fruit Bats photo from Flickr user t-dawg Review by Aaron Sankin Under Eric Johnson's porkpie hat sits a head full of deep thoughts. Johnson is the lead singer and creative force behind Fruit Bats, who headlined a solid evening of indie rock at Slim's last Friday night. Fruit Bats called their latest album The Ruminant Band, which suggests a bunch of chin-stroking English majors mulling matters philosophical more than it does people who actually stand on stage and rock. Luckily, while their country-flecked live show is certainly cerebral, the sound is much more muscular than that implies. Front-loading their set [...]
