Best Of 2019: Ian Young’s favorite show photos from 2019

Princess Nokia (photo: Ian Young) It was another year of incredible live music, from catching my favorite artists playing at my favorite festivals to discovering new acts playing in new cities and new venues. In total, I photographed 104 shows and 9 festivals, seeing a total of 394 performances. (Thank goodness for earplugs and insoles.) It was also a year where I explored new ways to express myself artistically, expanded my photography comfort zone, met some amazing new photographers, and of course had a helluva time in the pit. It may only last for three songs, but the photo pit [...]

Review + Photos: Florence and the Machine + Christine and the Queens at Concord Pavilion

Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine (photo: Ian Young) It might have been a blustery, late-season rainy Wednesday night, but that didn't stop scores of eager fans from packing into the Concord Pavilion to indulge in some anthemic tunes from two distinct voices in pop music. Supporting Florence and the Machine for the start of the fifth leg of the High As Hope tour, it was clear that Hélöise Letissier (Christine and the Queens) came armed and ready to unleash her carefully choreographed and ready-for-Broadway set of sparking pop tunes. After having to cancel an anticipated set at Coachella due [...]

Review + Photos: Christine and the Queens at the Fox Theater

Christine and the Queens (photo: Ian Young) As a concert photographer and lover of live music, I've been lucky enough to attend quite a number of shows, performances and festivals. But every now and then a performer comes along and makes you feel like you're experiencing live music for the first time. Héloïse Letissier, better known as Chris, flanked by dancers and an ace backing band, stunned the crowd at the Fox Theater in Oakland with a flawless, inspiring and jaw-dropping performance. From the technical perfection of a highly choreographed and physically demanding show to the emotional delivery of her deeply personal [...]

Roman Gokhman’s favorite concerts of 2015

Welcome to my annual countdown of the most entertaining music experiences of the year. I only went to 41 concerts. Life commitments and a family took a higher priority. But then again, I enjoy profiling an artist over critiquing the music. I put more thought into the concerts I attended, so I think this compilation is still “deserving,” whatever that means. Still, some iconic and talented performers didn’t make my top 10: No Elton John or AC/DC, Royal Blood or Kacey Musgraves (who both came close), no Mumford and Sons or Duran Duran. Those of you who have read my previous [...]
