Chelsea Wolfe finds songs in Carl Sagan and the Salton Sea

(photo: Bill Crisfari) Words by Erin Lyndal Martin Chelsea Wolfe loves heavy metal. So much so that in 2015 she made a Spotify playlist featuring some of her favorite metal songs. Though Wolfe’s own work encompasses many genres, she feels at home in the metal scene. “I’ve definitely found community and friendship among other bands who may not fit neatly within a specific genre, like Neurosis, Russian Circles, Converge, Sunn O))), Emma Ruth Rundle, True Widow, King Woman, Earth, Deafheaven,” Wolfe lists off. “I enjoy the heavy, comforting white noise mixed with extreme subjects and exhibition.” Heavy white noise is [...]

Review: Chelsea Wolfe dooms the Regency

Chelsea Wolfe (photo: Scott Russell) Los Angeles-based artist Chelsea Wolfe has operated as a fringe metal act for years now, draping her gothic folk influences in a dark but less visceral heaviness. With the release of her latest LP Abyss, the influences have become the spectacle. On Saturday night at the Regency in San Francisco, Wolfe brought the industrial and doom influences of Abyss to life — bathing the set in a blood red coloring and tasteful Nine Inch Nails-esque strobe use. Selecting primarily from Abyss, highlights included the pulsing, distorted Portishead-meets-Reznor bass of "Carrion Flowers"; the cinematic strings of "House of [...]

http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/LTM_September_2015.mp3 Download: Live This Month: September 2015 (Podcast #370) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. How has it taken this long to include Chelsea Wolfe in one of our podcasts? Wolfe started out in Sacramento before relocating to LA, and over the course of four albums has defined a unique mix of heavy doom and gothic folk. "Iron Moon" comes from her new album, Abyss, and it highlights both sides of her sound very well. Speaking of Sacramento, our state capital [...]

Review & Photos: Chelsea Wolfe @ Great American Music Hall

Photos by Zack Frederick The Great American Music Hall sold out last night, right around the time Dallas trio True Widow started playing at 9:15pm. Following an opening set from Screature, the sludgy shoegaze band performed songs from its new Circumambulation LP. Nicole Estill's heavy, droning bass lulled listeners into a subdued state, while Dan Philips frequently swapped out his electric guitars between songs. He even had to stop in the middle of the fourth song for another guitar change. "I got the wrong guitar!" Philips informed the sold out crowd. "I knew I would fuck up. I [...]

Editors' Picks: What We've Been Listening to This Week (Tim Hecker, Disappears, New Bums, Chelsea Wolfe)

Tim Hecker - 'Virgins' Nicole: Tim Hecker strikes again with the first taste of his next album out in October, Virgins: "Virginal II." Coming down from the high that Majical Cloudz intoxicated me with last weekend, my listening habits all week have gone in a serious, borderline creepy direction. This Hecker track is no less haunting -- the chime-like piano loop in the beginning sounds straight out of a murder scene, then fuzzes out into a beautiful, rhythmic churning of synths. Calling himself both a musician and sound artist, Tim Hecker has worked with Brooklyn-based experimental artist Daniel [...]
