Mixtape: Twelve Highlights from 2012 (Podcast #295)

Mixtape: Twelve Highlights from 2012 (Podcast #295) "Best of" lists are intrinsically a tricky proposition, but compiling them is made all the more difficult by the San Francisco Bay Area's rich pool of local musical talent. This mixtape compiles twelve of our favorite local performers from this year, all of whom had big years in their respective genres. Limiting the list to twelve meant that a lot of talented folks were left off, but this mix offers a nice sampling of some of the best that 2012 had to offer. Subscribe to The Bay Bridged Podcast! Mixtape: Highlights from San Francisco Bay Area Punk, Post-Punk and Hardcore (Podcast #290)

Mixtape: Highlights from San Francisco Bay Area Punk, Post-Punk and Hardcore (Podcast #290) The Bay Area has held a prominent place in punk music since punk first became a thing, with groups like Crime, Avengers, Flipper, and Dead Kennedys among the genre's most important '70s and '80s bands. As punk artists began to achieve mainstream success in the '90s, Bay Area bands were again at the forefront, while a wide variety of acts continued to operate independently on local labels like Lookout! and Fat Wreck Chords. Given that history, it shouldn't be surprising to find that there's still a wealth [...]

Ceremony – "Everything Burns"

Ceremony - "Everything Burns" Northern California band Ceremony originally came out onto the scene as a hardcore punk band; their later albums leading up to Zoo signaled a shift to a cleaner, classic punk sound. Now we are presented with the track "Everything Burns" off their upcoming tour-only split on Matador with Titus Andronicus. The song itself is a shiny rock'n'roll number, sung (not yelled). Titus Andronicus contribute the track "In A Big City," and the 7" split will be available here in San Francisco at their Great American show on November 12, 2012 (full dates are after the jump). Photos & Review: Fucked Up, Ceremony @ Slim's, 9/5/12

Photos by Mark Pantoja There are a lot of reasons why I love Fucked Up, but their lead singer Pink Eyes (real name: Damian Abraham) has to be the chief one. I hate to reduce a band this good to just one element like that, but the dude once tweeted "Black Keys = Nickelback for hipsters." That, and the first time I saw Fucked Up play was at an outside show at SXSW—when it was actually pretty cold down in Austin—but Abraham stripped to his undies anyway, climbed on top of a speaker, poured a cup of ice water down [...]

Ceremony cover Violent Femmes' "Kiss Off"

Though the idea of a cover song is usually to turn the original on its head, sometimes an existing song is so good that you welcome a largely note-for-note cover. While “Blister in the Sun” typically gets all the cover love, we’re partial to Ceremony’s version of The Violent Femmes’ “Kiss Off,” that one song by them that you know but you don’t know you know. Recorded as part of The A.V. Club’s “A.V. Undercover” series, Rohnert Park’s Ceremony retains the Femmes’ prickly-but-playful spirit. We thank them for not going with their original selection, “Danger Zone"...though we do wonder what [...]

Video: Ceremony destroys 924 Gilman

In a fortuitous turn of events for everyone involved (including — perhaps especially — you and me), the guys from a video production crew called Glasnost NYC just so happened to be here in the Bay Area for the recent Ceremony show at 924 Gilman. The video they shot is as much a behind-the-scenes style live video about Cermony as it is an homage to the venerable all-ages, volunteer-run, old school Berkeley punk club. Turns out that while it was coincidence that the filmmakers were in town and ready to shoot, it wasn't all serendipity that made it happen. Glasnost [...]

Photo Recap: The Bay Area rocks South by Southwest 2012

Two Gallants at the Google Live Lot. 03/16/12 I present to you some photos of just a few of the Bay Area bands that played SXSW this year. I'm only one man, so I called on a couple friends to contribute photos as well. But even still, there was only so wide a net we could cast. For the first time in years, for instance, I somehow managed to not catch a single Thee Oh Sees concert — but have no fear, a Spin photographer captured this amazing moment (seriously, click through, it's worth it). Gratuitous second shot of Two [...]

1-2-3-4 Go! announces Go! Go! Festival featuring Ceremony, The Avengers, The Criminals

A four-plus day showcase celebrating the indie and punk scene in Oakland and the Bay Area, the festival will include performances by North Bay hardcore punks Ceremony, legendary San Francisco punk rockers The Avengers, and a reunion show from Berkeley pop-punk group The Criminals. The organizers plan to announce another [...]
