Advance Base (ex-Casiotone) playing Cafe Du Nord, 6/7/12

Advance Base, the new project of former Casiotone for the Painfully Alone singer/songwriter Owen Ashworth, is coming to San Francisco on June 7. Their debut album A Shut-In’s Prayer will be out on Orindal Records on May 15. So far we've only heard one single from the album — a melancholic track entitled "New Gospel" which features the same programmed, basic drums of old Casiotone recordings mixed with cleanly produced piano. It's a natural (and necessary) progression for Ashworth as he allows his deep crooning voice to carry the track without burying himself under cheap Casio tones or lo-fi distortion. [...]

Video & Photos: Farewell to Casiotone for the Painfully Alone (1997-2010)

http://vimeo.com/17546272 It starts and ends here in San Francisco for Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, the musical diary of Owen Ashworth which closed its covers this Sunday evening at Bottom of the Hill. What started as a simpler venture into electronic pop and nostalgic imagery, the early songs referencing San Francisco's beloved bars and transit systems, matured and moved as Owen did geographically. Though he's resided in Chicago for some years now, Ashworth concluded the project where it started on its thirteenth anniversary (first show ever was in 1997), and not onstage alone, but with friends. The Donkeys were his [...]

SF Popfest Review: Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, Nodzzz, Antarctica Takes It!, English Singles 5/28

Photos by: Nicole Browner Drinking beer with ice and having nothing for sale, Sacramento's English Singles opened the night and tore through a short but very satisfying set of sweet pop ditties. The lead singer cut loose on the last song to dance around a bit, a nice surprise as the other members seemed a little green. The band is young but very tight and they have quite an albums worth of catchy, infectious pop. We desperately await that release. Antartica Takes It! (Oakland) was hands down the cutest band of the night. In fact, they may be the cutest [...]
