Noise Pop Review: Geographer, Butterfly Bones, K.Flay, Funeral Party

Photos by: Anna Gazdowicz It is seemingly customary for any Noise Pop show to look like a bit of a head-scratcher on paper. Typically when I see a Noise Pop bill I think to myself "what an odd combination, will that work?" In my experience it always does. The shows are stylistically diverse and well-curated. Funeral Party is an L.A. quintet, though their sound is a bit more New York. Propulsive drums and charging guitar are augmented by synthy keys. Frontman Chad Elliott has an engaging and powerful voice which was equally melodic and scorching. Their live performance lives up [...]

Man/Miracle team up with Rogue Wave on tour, release new 7″

In addition to playing at this year's SxSW (you know, at parties like the Bay Area Takeover - *ahem*), Oakland's Man/Miracle are scheduled to open for fellow Oaklanders Rogue Wave on the band's April Permalight tour. This tour will conclude with a hometown stop at the Fillmore on April 30th. Man/Miracle - "Hot Sprawl" Man/Miracle just released a new split 7" for the single "Other People" via Third Culture Records, featuring SF's Butterfly Bones on the B-side. This is, of course, the band's first release since The Shape of Things saw proper release via Third Culture Records just [...]

Noise Pop 2010: Wallpaper., The Limousines, Butterfly Bones @ Slim’s

Butterfly Bones - "xoxo" Due to a boppingly unmissable Noise Pop Happy Hour at Benders and a wicked long line at (sold-out!) Slim's, I unfortunately missed Battlehooch's set at the Wallpaper./Limousines co-headlined show Friday night, but Butterfly Bones wasted no time in cheering me up. The electro-pop-rock quartet have definitely been coming up in the San Francisco scene. According to some cursory research and the look on the guys' faces, they'd never played a venue the size of Slim's before. Still, the band didn't have any trouble filling the stage with their glee, the venue with their buds [...]

The Rumble Wednesday: Jaguar Love, My First Earthquake, Butterfly Bones

This month's edition of the Rumble, while still true to form, will be extra special. First, given that the festival is rapidly approaching, this event is being billed as a "Noise Pop Warm-Up." Second, the event is saying a sad goodbye to its Harlot roots and moving over to begin a new relationship with Cafe du Nord. And third, the 26th edition of the Rumble will help to celebrate not just one, but TWO birthdays: the 5th birthday of the Owl Mag, and the 7th birthday of one BAGeL Ted and his internet radio genius. Jaguar Love - [...]
