Burnt Ones release new album, new video, and launch US tour

Psych-pop trio Burnt Ones have released their latest record, You’ll Never Walk Alone, and it’s now available to stream on their Bandcamp page. The album offers up 11 tracks of psychedelic bubblegum pop, chewed up with some distorted guitars, then made sticky and rolled around in some San Francisco grit. In an interview earlier this year, front man Mark Tester admitted to using “virtually every instrument and sound at our immediate disposal to record [the album], without much consideration going in to how we would play any of the songs live,” so listen in for the layers of sounds emerging on You’ll [...]

Burnt Ones record release show, 4/12/2013

Earlier this year, Burnt Ones front man Mark Tester shared details with us about his bands upcoming LP, You'll Never Walk Alone, describing the record as much more personal to him than Burnt Ones' previous work. With "overarching themes of detachment, want and loneliness from personal and impersonal perspectives,” the band's third full-length effort promises to be one that speaks to universal emotions and anxieties, all through a shiny lens of glam rock, psych-pop. When we spoke, Mark also admitted that he and his band mates used "virtually every instrument and sound at our immediate disposal to record it, without much consideration going in [...]

Live This Month: April 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #303)

Live This Month: April 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #303) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. We're due for an onslaught of anticipated new albums from Bay Area bands, and that outpouring begins this month with a number of the local artists we've included in this mix. Both Life Coach and Tartufi have gained members since their last records -- Life Coach recently became a duo with the addition of The Mars Volta's Jon Theodore [...]

Review & Photos: The Fresh & Onlys, R. Stevie Moore, Plateaus, and Burnt Ones @ Bottom of the Hill, 2/27/13 (Noise Pop 2013)

Photos by Lauren Espina This week's Noise Pop 2013 festivities continued at Bottom of the Hill on Wednesday night with toe-tapping performances from San Francisco garage rockers Burnt Ones and The Fresh & Onlys, plus San Diego's Plateaus and D.I.Y. legend R. Stevie Moore. Each of the four bands is a quartet, providing for a well-rounded rock show. Burnt Ones warmed up the stage with an impressive rock 'n' roll set. Frontman Mark Tester relied on feedback from his amp to provide the set with gritty distorted guitar sound as he belted out his vocals to the crowd. Amy Crouch [...]

Burnt Ones drop new single, "Fountain of Youth"

Burnt Ones served up the first taste of their upcoming album You'll Never Walk Alone, in the form of "Fountain of Youth." While steady drum beats, mind-bending distortion and dreamy vocals make up a familiar foundation for the song, a grimy hip-churning guitar riff is uplifted by pop melodies and gorgeous feedback that sounds a lot like barely there harmonies. The combination makes for a seriously shoulder shaking tune that simmers just below the lid, tugging our hairs with the promise of an explosion before fading out, leaving us with an itch that will only be scratched on the April 30th [...]

Burnt Ones release "Strawberry Tomb" and share details about upcoming LP

Since 2009, Burnt Ones have been torching San Francisco venues and house parties with a glittering pop sensibility and a distinctive fusion of garage rock/pop and psych/punk elements. The band gave us something to really sink our teeth into with their 2010 debut LP Black Teeth & Golden Tongues, solidifying themselves as a rock and roll force to be reckoned with and prompting everyone who listened to consider exactly what genre their warm, fuzzy sound qualified as. It certainly sounds like pop, but pop that exploded under the weight of its own gritty reverb and trembling tremolo textures. It could [...]

Best of 2012: Matt Jones on Burnt Ones

PROTECTION CIRCLE b/w BLACK LEATHER OR FURS by Burnt Ones This is a tough one, as there's so many great bay area bands these days and I have time and love invested in quite a few of them, but I keep coming back to Burnt Ones...full disclosure, they're all friends of mine, Mark Tester and I work together at Pirates, and Castle Face is hoping to put out a Burnt Ones record in 2013...so it's a close knit recommendation here, but a worthwhile one. Though I had bought their record Black Teeth & Golden Tongues at Amoeba based on the [...]

Download seven Velvet Underground covers from The Fresh & Onlys, Blasted Canyons, Burnt Ones, and more

As we previously reported, Castle Face Records is releasing a tribute album to The Velvet Underground & Nico in conjunction with the 45th anniversary reissue of that classic VU record. The bad news is that the label's already sold out of copies -- just another reason to see any of these bands at shows, I think -- but tracks from the covers record have been steadily leaking around the web in recent weeks. Here's the bulk of the record, most of which can be downloaded for your future listening pleasure. (Download here.)

Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, The Fresh & Onlys on 'The Velvet Underground & Nico' tribute

Ty Segall, Thee Oh Sees, and The Fresh & Onlys are among those that recorded cover tracks for an upcoming The Velvet Underground & Nico 45th anniversary tribute. If anyone could do justice to Lou Reed and company's iconic 1967 debut, it would be these guys. White Fence, The Mallard, Burnt Ones, and Warm Soda also contribute to the the album, which will be released in various formats on October 30th via John Dwyer's Castle Face Records label in conjunction with Universal Music Enterprises. The initial release of 'The Velvet Underground & Nico' by Castle Face And Friends will include [...]
