Brilliant Colors release "I Was Born A Fantasist," play Rickshaw Stop on 3/26/13

As the days are getting longer and warmer, and your SXSW hangover is more-or-less gone that can only mean that spring is here! And so is a new Brilliant Colors song! "I Was Born a Fantasist" was recently dropped by the San Francisco band, signed to Slumberland Records. As the ladies prep for a slew of shows in the U.K. next month, they will also be playing at the Rickshaw Stop on Tuesday with Veronica Falls and Golden Grrrls. Released in 2009, Brilliant Colors's debut, Introducing, was lauded as an almost-impeccable album of indie pop with a slightly-heavy twist. That [...]

Noise Pop 2012: Veronica Falls, Bleached, Brilliant Colors, Lilac @ Rickshaw Stop 2/24/12

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a person in possession of a band must be in want of great hair. Last Friday night at the Rickshaw Stop, which featured four sets of fuzzy guitars, was no exception. Unfortunately I missed Lilac’s set, but I did catch the band’s frontman, Will Ivy, who recently moved down to Los Angeles after six years in the Bay Area. But don’t weep: Half the band is still in San Francisco, so hopefully that means they’ll keep playing shows up here every once in a while. He also cut his signature hair since I [...]

The return of Bay Area indie-pop band Imperial Teen this year has been met with lots of excitement, as their Cafe du Nord show will also be out of reach, unless there's a Craigslist miracle. SF Popfest 2011: Slumberland Records showcase @ Rickshaw Stop, 5/28/11

Saturday night's Slumberland Records showcase at the Rickshaw Stop was a mini-festival within SF Popfest 2011, like a set of Russian nesting dolls, or like something that's a smaller thing within a similar but larger thing other than a set of Russian nesting dolls. Promising ten bands in eight hours, the show offered prospective attendees a sampling of one of indie's most vital labels, but I'll confess to harboring a little bit of fear about the undertaking too. With a genre like indie pop, which often, and not altogether unfairly, gets derided as a little samey, one could imagine a [...]

Yard show runaround: Brilliant Colors, NODZZZ, Grass Widow

Photos by: Rachel Keenan My friend calls me up just before noon on Saturday and says there's some show down the street in someone or other's yard in a few hours. Turns out to be a cluster of three kick ass garage pop bands tucked behind a turn of the century house on Folsom in the inner Mission, a swath of Ray Bans overlooking the deck, and a bunch of smiley neighborhood rock kids drinking Red Stripe in cans. Just about saved the day from an earlier excursion to Dolores Park, where a proselytizing God-abiding hippie band had their monitors [...]

The Splinters play with Buzzer, Brilliant Colors @ BotH tomorrow

In every town live few riot grrrls, and in Oakland reside The Splinters -- peppery and adorable, which has probably been said more than enough. I've encountered a few of the girls, as friends of a friend at a party, of course -- and I can say just after a brief encounter that I'd want to hear/see their band. What's the difference but a change in environment and a couple instruments in their hands? These girls definitely have figured out how to have fun, independent the setting. The Splinters - "Splintered Bridges" Playing carefree, 3-chord carols is a [...]
