Boy Scouts release video for “Wish”

Boy Scouts (photo: Norm deVeyra) Last month, Oakland singer-songwriter Taylor Vick of Boy Scouts released "Wish," her first track since her most recent album Free Company, which was recorded entirely in a shipping container converted studio. "This song is an ode to reflecting on the past,” Vick explains. “Sorting through waves of nostalgia, and hoping for a future in which reflecting on aspects of the past can feel good, and what a privilege that is." Vick's silvery voice is thick with emotion and a yearning hope. The video beautifully manifests the nostalgia conveyed in the song's lyrics, set against a backdrop of [...]

It sure didn't take long for our world to be upended, did it? Look, there's no way to pussyfoot around this: COVID-19 sucks. It will cost countless lives the world over. But as we hunker down in this preemptive shelter in place quarantine, why not fire up the stereo and pass the days away with some tunes? Photos: Jay Som + Boy Scouts at the Fillmore

Jay Som (photo: Norm deVeyra) The Bay Area's rock darling Melina Mae Duterte, better known by her stage name Jay Som, gave a hometown performance at the beloved Fillmore in support of her latest album, Anak Ko. Also performing that night were fellow Bay Area rock band Boy Scouts. It was a night of fantastic indie rock from some of the best in the business and all locally-grown, and our photographer Norm deVeyra has the gallery below to share from the night of both bands.

Boy Scouts release new single and video, “Hate Ya 2”

Just in time for their fall US tour, Boy Scouts have released a new single and accompanying video "Hate Ya 2." Raised in California's Central Valley, Boy Scouts (also known as Taylor Vick) grew up listening to soft, acoustic guitar focused icons like the Dixie Chicks and Michelle Branch. Their latest single "Hate Ya 2" discusses the difficulties of navigating relationships and conflicting emotions. Boy Scouts' latest release is the perfect introduction to their upcoming album Free Company out August 30. The Oakland-based singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist makes music that is warm and inviting; similar to seeking advice from a [...]

Boy Scouts release balloon-filled video for “Get Well Soon”

Boy Scouts at Phono del Sol 2019 (photo: Ian Young) For anyone having a low day, a tough time, or who just enjoys colorful moments watching balloons doing what they were born to do, we recommend viewing the new video for Boy Scouts’ “Get Well Soon,” off their forthcoming album, Free Company. The song captures Taylor Vick's vocals in their most perfect range, accompanied by ultimately harmonized folksy guitars and catchy-soothing lines and melodies. We recommend waiting for that pure moment at the end of the video where there’s a laugh and a smile. Stay tuned for Free Company off [...]

Boy Scouts graces US, Phono del Sol stages

It’s a welcomed sunny afternoon after quite a long rainy spell in Oakland. Plants lining the sidewalks are vibrant shades of peach, purple, and yellow, and as I stroll past succulents, sage, lavender, poppies, and bees, the dreamy folk music in my headphones created one of those this is the perfect music for this moment feelings. The music is by Boy Scouts, and its quiet guitar blooms louder into heady strumming and quiet keys grow within the tambourine-lined tracks, all rooted by the sweet-voiced frontperson Taylor Vick. I felt like my walk could have lasted all day. Boy Scouts’ last [...]

SXSW Day Four: The life-changing magic of Lizzo

Lizzo (photo: Ian Young) Photos and additional reporting by Ian Young and Norm deVeyra Ian's Highlights At this point, I'm not really sure what day or time or year or planet it is. It feels as if I've been abducted by aliens and this is all a simulation where everything kind of feels real but also kind of feels off. SX is kind of a music festival... but it's also kind of just a huge marketing ploy where music is the free koozie that we join some mailing list for. The most convincing case this is all a fantasyland? I [...]
