Following tweet poll, Blackbird Blackbird, Giraffage, and Mark Redito to form an emo band

The arms of this Blackbird Blackbird member at our Phono Del Sol Festival sum up our excitement of his latest news: he, Mark Redito (fka Spazzkid), and SF local Giraffage are taking their friendship to the next level and forming an emo band. Mikey Maramag, the LA via SF via Honolulu electro-pop musician who performs under Blackbird Blackbird, tweeted out a New Year's challenge. We're not sure if they were expecting it to reach 500, but it did just that and 29 more. https://twitter.com/BLCKBRDBLCKBRD/status/682407284954296320 NestHQ was the first to talk to the guys about the reality of the project, confirming that it is, in fact, very real. Phono del Sol: Blackbird Blackbird soars on ‘Tangerine Sky’

Part of the wonder of Phono del Sol 2014 performer Blackbird Blackbird's new Tangerine Sky is how it deftly defies categorization. Read a couple of reviews and you're likely to hear songs from this aural Rorschach test described as R&B, folktronica, dream pop, post-dubstep, and my favorite (or maybe least favorite, I can't really tell at this point) "psychedelic poptronica." In cases like this, I always default to the vague and generally unhelpful "electronic pop," which meets the truth factor but totally undersells the level of genre-blending creativity that San Francisco's Mikey Maramag serves up on his new collection of [...]

Blackbird Blackbird releases dark R&B single “There is Nowhere”

Blackbird Blackbird, the San Francisco project of Mikey Maramag, just released a single from upcoming album Tangerine Sky (due May 27 via Om Records). The track, called "There is Nowhere", is as consumptively dreamy as many other cuts from his 2012 EP Boracay Planet and 2011's Halo, but "There is Nowhere", which you can already grab on Blackbird Blackbird's Bandcamp site, is a foray into hypnotic, trance-inducing R&B. Maramag, who is currently on tour in Europe, also released an accompanying video for the new track. It's a bit dark, featuring a young boy jumping into the deep end, but it speaks to the [...]

Blackbird Blackbird releases another new track, "Refresh"

Just a month after releasing his first track since last year's Boracay Planet EP, SF's Mikey Maramag (aka Blackbird Blackbird) is back with another new song, "Refresh". It's another lush, club-ready track capable of getting even the most rigid audience members moving – something that I wish I could have seen at Maramag's appearance with Hot Chip, Tycho, and Social Studies at Slim's on Tuesday night as part of the Converse Represent series (but alas, I was one of the many fans left hanging by Converse's lottery system). My only complaint? At barely two-and-a-half minutes, "Refresh" leaves the listener wanting [...]

Blackbird Blackbird – "Summer's Almost Here"

Back with his first new material since last year's excellent EP Boracay Planet, SF's Mikey Maramag (aka Blackbird Blackbird) just released yet another irresistibly lavish track, the new single "Summer's Almost Here". According to Maramag, "This track is about dancing under moonlight with friends and loved ones, embracing the seasons, and transitioning into a period of irreversible change." The cover art (above) reflects these themes, an ethereal picture of lush green flora overlaid with images of what appear to be clusters of stars, and "Summer's Almost Here" transcends Maramag's description of Blackbird Blackbird as a just another synthpop band, weaving [...]
