Birds & Batteries, Winter’s Fall @ Starry Plough Friday

It feels as if this week has been thick with show recommendations, which it has been. Berkeley-bound and rejuvenated with new sets are both San Francisco's Birds & Batteries and Winter's Fall -- they're playing a free show at the Starry Plough on Friday with Forest Floor and The Waste Band (9pm). Winter's Fall will be playing a stripped down, fresh set sampling their upcoming release which was recorded at Sharkbite (Ted Leo, The Aimless Never Miss, Totimoshi). We did a podcast with the band back in 2008 still available to stream. In addition, we like what's available to hear [...]

Best of 2009: Odawas on darwinsbitch and Birds & Batteries

Michael: Earlier this year, with no more than a handful of months in the Bay Area, a group called darwinsbitch asked us to play a show with them at the Totally Intense Fractal Mindgaze Hut in Oakland. The legend and mystery of time, place and person have severely affected the direction I see the music in my head turning. darwinsbitch turned out to be a person, a one Marielle Jakobson, playing a heady violin accompanied by some sort of digital drone device. darwinsbitch - "Iron Lake" The impact of her performance that night was devastating, making my own [...]

BlueSix weekend: 3 Leafs, Walking in Sunlight, Birds & Batteries + more

It's a tough weekend to avoid the BlueSix: two solid and almost entirely native back-to-back lineups. Administering massive psych jams is 3 Leafs, who has many times been undeniably named a supergroup including members of Horn of Dagoth, Black Fiction, Tussle and Citay. They're joined on Saturday (9pm) by Birds & Batteries, Sean Smith and Spencer Owen (Smith plays guitar for Citay), and Tony Dryer. Sean Smith - "Topinanbour" Then comes Americana-folk Sunday, consisting of Justin Frahm (of This Union Standard), ex-Bay Area resident Matt Bauer and Walking in Sunlight. Walking in Sunlight is the two-man version of [...]

Tuned In at the SF Conservatory of Music – A Minifest with Mad Skills

With the first steps into their building, I was immediately blown away by the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. The new campus on Oak Street is gorgeous, and I was lucky enough to attend their first annual Tuned In fundraiser. All groups performing during the evening had to have either a current conservatory student or an alumni in their membership. With those kind of credentials, I knew the caliber of talent was going to be high. Perhaps I'd encounter Yngwie Malmsteen's and Victor Wooten's imaginary love child? Kicking off the evening was the Pacific Guitar Ensemble in a very intimate [...]

Tuned In benefit for the SF Conservatory of Music

Birds & Batteries - "The Villain" The SF Conservatory of Music sure knows how to throw a benefit. Tuned In is a first annual benefit concert to support the Conservatory's scholarship fund, taking place this Wednesday, November 11th from 7-11pm at the SF Conservatory on 50 Oak Street. It features an eclectic lineup of acts including The Magik*Magik Orchestra (Tiny Telephone's house orchestra) and Birds & Batteries alongside the Pacific Guitar Ensemble, Edmund Welles, 49 Special, the Erik Jekabson Quartet, DJ Mancub, DJ Ben and Venus Loops. Tickets include booze, food and the show, and can be purchased [...]

The Bay Bridged Presents: Birds & Batteries’ EP Release Party Sunday!

We've long loved the music of Birds & Batteries, the San Francisco quartet whose two full lengths have mixed electronic sounds, alt-country riffs and swooning melodies to create some great, dynamic rock. The band's appearance on our The Bay Bridged, Volume 2 compilation was pure rock and roll, but they continue to reinvent themselves on the Up To No Good EP, out October 26th, which songwriter Mike Sempert describes as "a spooky-funky adventure." At their EP release show, Birds & Batteries will bring together all of their diverse sounds in one very special performance. The band's first set will focus [...]
