Battlehooch kick off upcoming tour at the Hemlock Tavern Thursday night
So here are a few nuggets of news that will be much appreciated by fans of the psych-rock wizards in Battlehooch: the band is announcing both a March West coast tour and a batch of new songs. Kicking off on St. Patrick's Day, the group will trek through the great Pacific Northwest on their way to the Treefort Music Fest in Boise, Idaho. There's no rest for the ambitious either: Upon returning, they will be heading into the studio to record six brand new tracks, all of which will be debuted at their Hemlock show Thursday night. That means there [...]
Behind the Music: How Local Musicians are Paying the Bills (Part Three)
As this series continues, I have found that though they're ascending post late night performance and punching the clock on the daily, your favorite local artists actually love their day jobs. Further, they're inspired by them. In this round of interviews, I had a blast absorbing the passion that these three all have for their day jobs-- a passion that underscores and overflows into their theatrical sounds. I asked these three quirky local artists the same five questions to find out a little more about what they're up to during the day. Patrick Dale Smith: Battlehooch // Attendant at Musée Mécanique 1. In what way does [...]
Battlehooch return to Slim’s Saturday night
It's been awhile. Battlehooch hasn't played a show in San Francisco in six months, or about an eternity in local band years, so expect the city's staple psychedelic outfit to really bring it at their Slim's show January 30th. Recently returned from a 10-day songwriting retreat and a mini SoCal tour, the group is happy to be back in the city by the Bay, and promises a new, exciting show for its hometown crowd. Maybe expect a Bowie cover or two. Not to name-drop, but I share a rehearsal studio with these dudes, and I may or may not one [...]

Photo by Theodore Maider Every Thursday at 8am, a group of musicians, music industry professionals, and everything in between meet up at San Francisco's Piano Fight for Balanced Breakfast, a meet-up catered to tackling, addressing and learning the many facets of the music industry. Starting in San Francisco, the meet-up has spearheaded the movement toward demystifying many aspect of an otherwise difficult to navigate or cryptic industry. Along with this, Balanced Breakfast has presented numerous shows around the Bay Area (and even at SXSW) and hosted other gatherings. Later this month, Balanced Breakfast will be presenting one of their biggest [...]
Premiere: Battlehooch releases new single “Grace of Lace”
Battlehooch is known to break the boundaries of musical genres, crossing psychedelia, pop and rock n' roll into a mutant-like sound that is epic and undefinable. Coming off of an east coast tour in April, the band is back home and hitting the ground running with new material. The power group, which consists of Pat Smith (vocals); AJ McKinley (guitar/vocals); Tom Hurlbut (sax/flute/clarinet/vocals); Ben Juodvalkis (keyboards); Grant Goodrich (bass); Ryan Huber (drums/vocals), has a feel and sound that is similar to venturing through a new and uncharted world. It's grand and beautiful. The band is furthering their repertoire with a new single titled "Grace [...]
Battlehooch drops new EP Wink
"Come take a chance with me / The less that we know, the better we'll be," Battlehooch sings as a suitable invitation to their new EP Wink. It's quite true too: the less that, you, the listener knows about the warped synth sounds, guitar freakouts and dreamy vocal melodies, the more you'll be surprised and enchanted by the group's unique blend of mind-melting psychedelia and palatable garage pop. However, even if one does futilely attempt to describe the music of Battlehooch to an outsider, there's no substantially adept way to adequately translate their strange sonic structures into adjectives known in [...]
Battlehooch debuts new single “Fountaineer”
Battlehooch has a trippy new single out. Called "Fountaineer" and included on their upcoming new EP, WINK, the song finds the psych-rockers channeling the Brian Jonestown Massacre and the more surreal aspects of '90s Britpop outfits like Blur and the Stone Roses. Beginning with ambient synth noise, driven by a booming, simple drumbeat and bolstered by echoing harmonies, the tune is a slow burn that takes its time to hook you in, but, once you're in, you'll never come out. As you hit the last minute, when all the instrumentation collides to form one huge wonderwall of sound, you subconsciously realize [...]
