Mixtape: The Musical World of Kelley Stoltz

This post first ran on KQED.org. http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/Kelley_Stoltz_Mixtape.mp3 Download: Mixtape: The Musical World of Kelley Stoltz (Podcast #389) If one were only to consider his consistently strong solo albums, San Francisco musician Kelley Stoltz would rightly be labeled an impressive talent. Over the past decade and a half, he's released seven LPs of finely-tuned rock-pop for labels that include Castle Face, Third Man, and Sub Pop. Influenced by classic artists like The Kinks and The Beach Boys, Stoltz conveys a unique and ever-evolving interest in pop mixed with elements of psychedelia and garage rock. Even more impressively, his solo albums have [...]

Mixtape: Catching Up With Some Former Locals

http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/Former_Locals_Mix.mp3 Download: Mixtape: Catching Up With Some Former Locals (Podcast #348) The news that John Dwyer of San Francisco mainstays Thee Oh Sees was moving to Los Angeles – followed shortly thereafter by a Dwyer-penned press release that called the City a “graveyard” of “tech waste” – caught many of us by surprise, but it probably shouldn’t have. Indie musicians frequently leave their home bases for new environs. Musicians move for a variety of reasons--for a change of pace, to be closer to collaborators, and to find new receptive audiences. Locally, many have been concerned about the high cost of [...]

With South by Southwest luring over one thousand bands to Austin later this month, it's touring season in indie music. While that means plenty of locals are already on the road, it also means some exciting opportunities to see buzzed-about out-of-town acts without taking a flight to Texas. Those acts include UK producer Forest Swords, touring around SXSW [...]

Bart Davenport releases 'Cheap Words' video, directed by filmmaker Peter Rubi

Bay Area-son-turned-L.A.-resident Bart Davenport recently dropped a video for "Cheap Words", the b-side to his "Someone2Dance" 7" that came out back in February. The video — directed by filmmaker Peter Rubi — is a moving piece that compliments the mood of Davenport's track, which he describes as the "loneliness and isolation" one feels in a crumbling relationship. Starring Davenport and a love interest played by actress and musician Erin Weber (of Garbaj Kaetz and formerly of SF band Crack: We Are Rock), it features "El Barto" cruising through downtown Los Angeles (warts and all) in a 1973 Chrysler Newport, a [...]

Bart Davenport to release new 7-inch on Valentine’s Day at Cafe du Nord with Sam Flax, Extra Classic

The musically eclectic Berkeley native Bart Davenport will drop his new 80s power pop-inspired 7-inch, Someone2Dance, on Valentine’s Day. His label, Antenna Farm Records, describes each side as "a blistering nail in the coffin of romance,” with a sound akin to “Dwight Twilley getting into a fistfight with The Cars." Produced by long-time collaborator Sam Flax, the record was co-released with San Francisco's Smile! Records and follows his 2010 covers album, Searching For Bart Davenport. The vinyl is limited to a print run of 500 copies, and each copy comes with covers hand-screened by Neil Martinson and an MP3 download [...]
