Jon Porras (of Barn Owl) announces solo album on Thrill Jockey

Jon Porras (one half of the minimalist guitar drone duo Barn Owl) will drop his newest solo album and Thrill Jockey debut Black Mesa on April 17. Recorded at home and in his practice space, the LP promises plenty more of the dark, atmospheric guitar and ambient drone Barn Owl uses to great effect. According to the press release, the seven track new album was "inspired by the hazy Americana of Sandy Bull, Popol Vuh and Neil Young, [as] Black Mesa endeavors to explore the depths of drone and ambient music." Videos: Barn Owl and Date Palms at the San Francisco Zen Center

The Bold Italic linked recently to these videos of Barn Owl and Date Palms performing at the TBI/San Francisco Zen Center event, "Meditations on San Francisco." The clips, shot by Christopher Musgrave, are both really great. The Date Palms one adds a hallucinatory visual layer to the mix, but both videos offer some ear-pleasing drones. Barn Owl is currently touring Europe -- see all of their upcoming shows here. Date Palms - Honey Devash (Edit) by Mexican Summer

Meditations on San Francisco: Barn Owl, Date Palms to perform at SF Zen Center

The San Francisco Zen Center isn't a place I'd normally expect to see a rock show, but the Center's upcoming "Meditations on San Francisco" event on October 8th (6pm, $12), co-presented with The Bold Italic, is set to feature performances by local drone-rockers Barn Owl, Date Palms, and Danny Paul Grody. Visual artist David Wilson will also be in attendance, showcasing "an interactive installation, which will allow guests to engage in a creative group activity, forming a geometric stained glass piece in the courtyard." If this sounds good to you, I'd act quickly. TBI says tickets are running out. Date [...]

Barn Owl – “Turiya”

Barn Owl - "Turiya" For a band closely identified with drone, there's something of a post-rock feel to Barn Owl's "Turiya," off the band's upcoming album, Lost in the Glare, out September 13th on Thrill Jockey. The difference is no doubt in part attributable to Jacob Felix Heule's presence on drums. Heule is only one of a number of contributors on Lost in the Glare: Michael Elrod (The Alps, Date Palms) plays a Juno 60, manipulated cassette tapes, tanpura and gong on the album, and Steve Dye performs on bass clarinet. Upcoming East Coast and European tour dates from Barn [...]

Barn Owl releases ‘Shadowland’ today, ‘Lost In The Glare’ LP coming soon

Barn Owl - "Shadowland" As we mentioned last month, Barn Owl's Shadowland EP comes out today on Thrill Jockey, and the SF drone-rock band is already looking forward to their next full length. Lost In The Glare is out September 13th, and that news is accompanied by the cool cover artwork and anticipation-building label announcement that I've come to expect from these guys. Listen to Shadowland's title track above, and check out more about the new LP below. Formed in 2006 by Jon Porras and Evan Caminiti, Barn Owl use their guitars to paint broad musical strokes on a canvas [...]

Barn Owl – “Shadowland”

Barn Owl - "Shadowland" As we near the release of Barn Owl's Shadowland, out on Thrill Jockey on June 23, the EP's title track has been exposed for listening. This three-song, 23 minute EP promises a ride through the galaxies via minimalist, droned out guitar (they're sort of Bay Area Sunn O))), allowing just enough time for a quick yoga sesh at sunrise. About the record, from the label: The new material on Shadowland takes inspiration from the devotional sounds of Popol Vuh and Alice Coltrane and also possesses the pitch black weightlessness of Fushitsusha and early Tangerine Dream. With [...]

Barn Owl – “Light from the Mesa”

Barn Owl - "Light from the Mesa" Ancestral Star is the latest release from SF drone rock duo Barn Owl and is out now on Thrill Jockey. Yesterday I listened to this song five times in a row and found its rumbling expanse to offer a very calming influence. Your results may vary, but you might as well give it a try. Barn Owl's got some East Coast/Midwest dates next week, with their next SF show opening for Om and Lichens at The Independent on December 16th.
