Mixtape: Fourteen Songs about Love for Valentine's Day (Podcast #300)

Mixtape: Fourteen Songs about Love for Valentine's Day (Podcast #300) In case you've managed to avoid this news until now, February 14th is Valentine's Day, the greeting card industry holiday that can compel even the least romantic to confront the topic of love. Over the past few years, plenty of our favorite indie rockers have explored the excitement and complications of love in terrific songs. Here, we've collected fourteen tracks about love's many facets, including the swooning romanticism of Real Estate, Cass McCombs, and Bare Wires. Affairs of the heart don't always end well, however, and the mix also offers [...]

Warm Soda (Matthew Melton of Bare Wires) releases first song, playing first show on 5/16/12

The breakup of Bare Wires after a troubled SXSW tour broke a lot of hearts, but if you're familiar with Matthew Melton's past projects (solo recordings, Snake Flower 2), you know he wouldn't be without a band for long. Indeed, Melton's post-breakup interview with All Shook Down noted the beginning of a new band called Warm Soda, which is playing its first show on Wednesday night with Thee Oh Sees, The Mallard, and Burnt Ones at the Brick & Mortar Music Hall. "But what does Warm Soda sound like," you ask? Take a listen to the brand new song "Reaction" [...]

Noise Pop 2012: Dirty Ghosts, Bare Wires, Carletta Sue Kay, Chapter 24 @ Brick and Mortar Music Hall 2/23/12

I am helplessly addicted to London's Chapter 24. Is it the intense Richard Lloyd guitar work? Is it the mere fact that no one else is making music like this?? Is it the image of melodica on leg?? Choose "D," all of the above. Since my first encounter at last year's SXSW, I've been hooked. They already have nine shows lined up for Austin, so I suppose I's got my work cut out for me. As fun as their recordings are, this is a band to see live. Singer Claire paces back and forth on stage like a caged cheetah. [...]

Mixtape: Music to Drink Beer to (Podcast #261)

Mixtape: Music to Drink Beer to (Podcast #261) Think of our latest mixtape as something of an hour-long indie music/beer pairing, inspired by our upcoming The Bay Brewed rock and roll beer festival. In this mixtape, we've collected music from 21 local indie rock, garage, lo-fi and psych bands whose rocking tunes serve [...]

Video: Bare Wires – “Never Gonna Change”

"Never Gonna Change" is a song from Bare Wires' Cheap Perfume 10", out 10/18 on Southpaw Records. Filmed by Southpaw's Rob Fales and lead Wire Matthew Melton (who also edited the clip), the video mixes kaleidoscopic fragments with scenes of Melton buying produce, riding an escalator, and getting on a Greyhound bus. The main takeaway of the vid, on first pass anyway, is a "soft punk" song promising that Cheap Perfume should be something special. (Via RSTB)
