May Day! Bandcamp takes no cut 5/1

Somehow the weeks have flown by and it’s almost May. Not to put words in Bandcamp’s mouth, but what I can only assume is in honor of May Day, the music streaming service is waiving their fees on the 1st of May. Now is a solidly wonderful time to buy music — digitally or records!? — because 100% of that hard-earned dinero will go straight to the artists. What about a pre-order of one of the Bay Area’s finest, Healing Potpourri? Excuse me? That baseline and those vocals? Get out of my car and into my life, or however that [...]

In an email to subscribers, the company writes, “If you are able, please join us in putting some much needed money directly into artists’ pockets.” To learn more about why Bandcamp is banding together — pun, yes — to support musicians, besides the obvious [...]

Y La Bamba signs new record ‘Mujeres’ at Bandcamp Oakland next week

We’re happy to announce Y La Bamba is playing a special (free!) show at the Bandcamp record store in Oakland on May 13. Their fifth record, Mujeres, was released in February and it’s a beautiful collection of sounds, feelings, rhythms, movements, languages, and beats beats beats. Title track “Mujeres” is layered with room-warming, powerful Latin percussion coming in from all sides. The harmonious vocal blending is empowering and reminds us what this album is really about. Fronted by powerhouse Luz Elena Mendoza, the Latinx indie-folk group continues to explore the experience of the Mexican-American woman. It’s a bold narrative brought [...]

Bandcamp launches vinyl pressing partnership with Pirates Press

In an effort to help independent artists fund their own vinyl releases, Bandcamp announced a new service facilitating crowdfunding the financing, production, and fulfillment of records. As KQED reported, Bandcamp has partnered with Pirates Press, another East Bay-rooted venture, to create a new record pressing and distribution service for artists on the platform. Pressing albums to vinyl can be a costly, time-consuming burden for artists, but the partnership with Pirates Press promises to take care of the business end of the process: pressing, printing, exchanges/returns, and more(Bandcamp also recently opened a brick-and-mortar store/office in Oakland that sells choice LPs from [...]
