Baeilou, Nahuel Bronzini, Mani Draper release “Uneven”
Start your week with another striking work from Oakland's Baeilou. This time it's with help from producer Nahuel Bronzini and Mani Draper, recently featured on an Awkward Convos with Beejus podcast. "Uneven" centers around the homelessness crisis in the Bay Area — already a looming issue when the song was released a few weeks ago, now made even more urgent by the spread of coronavirus. Spanning styles like jazz, rock, and hip-hop, it's a great encapsulation of all the Bay Area music scene has to offer.
Hear Oakland cellist Mia Pixley’s new single, “Where You Stood”
(photo: Karen Santos) Every time I think I've forgotten about Mia Pixley, she pulls me right back in with another enchanting work. Also known as Baeilou, the Oakland cellist released a single with her artist husband Kevin Shaw, joining their respective mediums for a new EP that confronts their new status as parents. "Where You Stood" is off their upcoming EP, The Spar Suite, out February 28.
Baeilou’s “Mourning Mantra” has a message
Oakland cellist Baeilou got a nice New Year's surprise this year: A fully-animated video for her song "Mourning Mantra." Her friend, director Miguel Rodrick, put together this imaginative video for the song, from last year's debut EP, just, you know, for the fun of it. Mourning Mantra by Baeilou from Miguel Rodrick on Vimeo. It's not all fun and games though — the song, and Rodrick's accompanying visuals, emphasize Baeilou (aka Mia Pixley)'s concern about the effects of global warming and the dangers of plastic waste in our environment. Baeilou releases ‘Inside Under’ EP, plays SF in October
Oakland cellist Baeilou recently unveiled her new EP, Inside Under. It's streaming on Spotify now. Building on the style established in her earlier single, "Eleanora," Inside Under is a dark, beautiful adventure into sadder, more somber sounds. Baeilou (aka Mia Pixley) has mostly worked in collaboration with other aritsts — Inside Under marks her debut EP as a solo artist. A Texas native, Baeilou previously lived and worked in New York, where she studied both mental health and cello performance. While she's not an Oakland native, her cello is. She'll be performing at Black Cat in San Francisco on October [...]
Listen to Oakland artist Baeilou’s beautiful “Eleanora”
The cello isn't something you hear a lot in pop music. Enter Oakland's Baeilou, a graduate of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music taking the cello to new and exciting places, and her new track "Eleanora." "Eleanora," as you might be able to tell from high school English class, is based on the Edgar Allan Poe poem of the same name. I hate using the word "haunting," but if you can come up with a better word for this song then I'd like to hear it. Baeilou has performed with off-Broadway casts, Fantastic Negrito, and in several film scores (she [...]
