Gardens & Villa playing pair of SF shows this week

Santa Barbara five-piece Gardens & Villa are returning to San Francisco this week to headline a pair of shows. The band will be performing for an all ages crowd at Rickshaw Stop on Friday, November 21, with support from James Supercave and To The Wedding. For the grown ups, the band will headline a separate (21+) show at The Independent the following night. The Saturday show will feature support from Astronauts, etc. and Eternal Drag. Gardens & Villa released their latest full-length, Dunes, earlier this year on Secretly Canadian. The band - Chris Lynch, Adam Rasmussen, Levi Hayden, Shane McKillop, [...]

Astronauts, etc. performs “Sadie” in living room session

In a progressively compelling video series uncovering the East Bay music scene, Dreaded Savage Films and Oaktown Indie Mayhem have shared yet another intimate performance, this time from Oakland natives Astronauts, etc. We've mentioned these guys before when French Cassettes were filmed strolling through San Francisco's Chinatown singing "Too Young." Completely adorable. This time around "Sadie" was filmed in lead singer Anthony Ferraro's crowded living room of silent friends. It has the same atmosphere of a Sofar Sounds secret show, except without the hand-wringing lottery drawing. It also features an incredibly cool Telecaster with kittens underneath the strings. Their next (public) show will be at The [...]

Astronauts, etc. shares “Fuss”, announces EP

After spending time playing keys in Toro y Moi's touring band, Berkeley's multi-talented Anthony Ferraro has shared a new track as Astronauts, etc., "Fuss". "Fuss" will appear on Astronauts, etc.'s new 6 song EP, Sadie, set for a September 6 release on LA's Hit City, U.S.A. We've been following Astronauts, etc.'s work closely since his first track, "Mystery Colors", was released almost two years ago, and there's no doubt Ferraro's dreamy futuristic falsetto deserves a proper release. Astronauts, etc. performs September 20 with Big Tree at Leo's, the brand-spankin' new venue Oakland's Temescal neighborhood, and a tour is also in [...]

CYMBALS hit Rickshaw Stop next Wednesday

Lauded as "down home disco," UK's CYMBALS will be hitting Rickshaw Stop next Wednesday with Berkeley's own Astronauts, etc. and Santa Cruz's The Wild Wild. The Age of Fracture, their most recent release on Tough Love Records, was produced by Dreamtrak (Hot Chip, Chad Valley) and the inspiration is described by frontman Jack Cleverly as "it hit me that I often feel paralysed by the feeling that everything is 'too complicated', and that many people I know feel that paralysis." We know you had an important evening of Netflix binge-watching planned, but do something a tad more exciting by dancing to speculative synth-heavy CYMBALS. CYMBALS, [...]

Non-Market collective releases debut compilation

"Non Market", a collective of East Bay friendbands that currently includes Trails and Ways, Astronauts etc., Waterstrider, Bells Atlas, The Seshen, (and perhaps a few more related acts), has released their debut compilation. The five track EP is all covers, partially because of the background of many of the bands' members. "A lot of us come from/get inspiration from the jazz tradition, where you play standards all the time," explains Keith Brower Brown of Trails and Ways, "and these tracks are some of the standards of right now." The EP kicks off with the best falsetto in town, Anthony Ferraro [...]

Video: Astronauts, etc. – "Sideswiped"

Before I wrote my Best of 2012 list, Berkeley's Anthony Ferraro told me his solo project, Astronauts, etc. was on a temporary hiatus. Luckily for us, the hiatus didn't last long. Ferraro released a handful of tracks over the past month, including covers of Youth Lagoon and KING on his SoundCloud page. His most recent single, "Sideswiped", came along with yet another outstanding space themed video from Ben Smith, who also created all three previous Astronauts, etc. videos. Ferraro's strength as a composer really shines through on the "Sideswiped" - an instrumental version of the track could easily stand out [...]

Live This Month: March 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #301)

Live This Month: March 2013 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #301) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. With South by Southwest leading much of independent music to converge in Austin later this month, tons of bands are hitting the road. All of them, it would seem, are playing in the San Francisco Bay Area in March. Even if you aren't going to SXSW this year, you can still catch plenty of buzzed-about acts, like Thurston Moore's [...]

Astronauts, etc. – "Mystery Colors"

Astronauts, etc. is the solo project of Anthony Ferraro, a UC Berkeley student who is also a member of Ash Reiter and The Lawlands. Ferraro had aspirations of being a classic pianist until arthritis forced him to find a new career path. In a great story of turning life's lemons into lemonade, Ferraro began creating electronic music, and the beautiful single "Mystery Colors" is the initial result. Almost immediately after being released, "Mystery Colors" caught fire in the blogosphere, sending Astronauts, etc. to #1 on the Hype Machine "Most Blogged Artists" chart in less than a week. The video for [...]
