Bandcamp’s first City Guide spotlights Oakland: Bells Atlas, Waterstrider, Kid Trails, and more

Recently, Oakland's music scene has been raking in the national press. In February, it was Fantastic Negrito delivering the winning video for NPR's Tiny Desk Concert contest filmed inside of a freight train: "behind a desk made of a steel slab and a work bench, this soulful character won our hearts" was Bob Boilen's praise. The winnings included a place on the bill for a SXSW showcase alongside the likes of Charles Bradley and King Tuff, and now he's slated to perform at this year's Outside Lands. Now, Bandcamp – or more specifically, content curator Andrew Jervis – has taken notice. Jervis explains, "Oakland is considered home to [...]

The Best of the Rest, 09/19/2014 (WATERS, Chuck Prophet, & more)

We here at The Bay Bridged get exposed to loads of new music everyday, and although we'd love to highlight everything that merits recognition, that just isn't always possible. So now's the time to clean up all the loose ends and get some well-deserving music out to the yearning masses. Below are the best of the rest from the last couple weeks, as determined by The Bay Bridged editors. Van Pierszalowski's project WATERS is now a five-piece that includes two members of The Tambo Rays (Brian DaMert and Greg Sellin), and the band is set for its second release, an [...]

Don’t forget: Celebrate the SF music scene Saturday at Not Dead Yet Fest!

"Everybody's moving to L.A." "All the art is happening in Oakland." "This place is dead anyway." No matter where you look these days, someone's singing the death knell of not only the San Francisco music scene, but San Francisco as we know it. If you believed most commentators, you'd picture the City as a seven-mile-by-seven-mile wasteland full of Mark Zuckerberg clones renting studios for $5K per month, applying for permits to build a Walmart on every corner from North Beach to Lake Merced, and namby-pamby former suburbanites petitioning to have every music venue shut down for excessive noise. Well, the [...]

Mixtape: 12 Original Holiday Songs from Local Artists (Podcast #323)

Mixtape and accompanying text by Russell Jelinek http://media.libsyn.com/media/thebaybridged/2013_SF_Holiday_Mix.mp3 Download: Mixtape: 12 Original Holiday Songs from Local Artists (Podcast #323) Last week, Slate lamented the lack of modern Christmas classics available, claiming Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas is You." While mainstream music may lack holiday classics, our local indie scene is always cranking out a wide variety of Christmas hits every year. In this mixtape, we have twelve ALL ORIGINAL holiday hits from local acts, ranging from the tender perfection of Ash Reiter's "Christmas in California" to Jingle Boyz (aka Adam Healton) laying down some, uh, irreverent rhymes on [...]

This Wednesday through Saturday, The Bay Bridged is teaming up with 20 Sided Records to present four consecutive nights of shows celebrating the release of the SF-based label's fourth compilation, These Strange Days, which is officially out today. On the eve of the shows, I caught up with [...]

Ticket Giveaway: 20 Sided Records Compilation Release Parties presented by The Bay Bridged

As we told you earlier this month, 20 Sided Records is dropping a compilation entitled "These Strange Days" on September 3, and the San Francisco-based label is teaming up with The Bay Bridged to fête the new record with four release parties at four separate SF venues on consecutive nights from September 4–7. In anticipation of these celebratory gigs (which benefit Make-A-Wish Foundation), we have a pair of tickets for each night to give away to four lucky readers. The compilation – 20 Sided's fourth such collection – includes 21 tracks from bands on the label's roster, including Ash Reiter, [...]

Video: Ash Reiter – "Treasure Island" (Music Video Race winner)

Ash Reiter is set to play their last scheduled show of the summer this evening at the Presidio Yacht Club, which is good for three reasons. The first reason is it gives us an excuse to share the winner for best overall video at the Music Video Race held earlier this month – Ash Reiter's video for "Treasure Island". Directed by Andrew Callaway, the video also won "best use of song" and "best concept": The second reason I'm glad Ash Reiter is playing this show is it gives you a chance to see the shift in the band's style. I [...]
