Beyond the Bay Area: A Sacramento Mixtape (Podcast #297)

Beyond the Bay Area: A Sacramento Mixtape (Podcast #297) It's not technically part of the Bay Area -- and by "technically," of course, we mean "at all" -- but we've been known to cheat a little bit and claim a good number of Sacramento bands as adopted locals over the years. Can you really blame us? Plenty of acts from the state's capital have made an big impact on independent music, including Death Grips, Chelsea Wolfe, and Trash Talk. All three of those groups eventually migrated to Los Angeles, with Death Grips leaking their latest album during a two-month stay [...]

Video: Gentleman Surfer – "Sweep Tactics"

Gentleman Surfer is the brainchild of Jon Bafus (ex-Sholi), who writes, arranges, and performs all of the project's songs. In November 2011, he released Bountiful Ore, a 12-track collection of instrumental tunes ranging in style from synthed-out victory lap music to jazzy, percussive numbers. Bafus also drums in the band Appetite, a skill at the forefront of many Ore songs. Bountiful Ore by Gentleman Surfer Recently, the first Gentleman Surfer video was released for the catchy track "Sweep Tactics," which you can watch below.

Video: Appetite – "Herbivore"

Sacramento's Appetite released the excellent, hook-filled Scattered Smothered Covered last summer via Crossbill Records. The newly released video for "Herbivore" visualizes the song's creative use of loops and unexpected melodic twists. It opens with female dancers in sweatpants slo-mo stomping choreographed moves behind a blindfolded and tied down Teddy Briggs. When he escapes, instead of seducing Briggs (the trope we've all been trained to expect), the girls take their dance stomps and beat the shit out of him. It's hip and it's twisted and it's exactly what we'd expect from Appetite. Have a look. Appetite performs at El Rio on [...]

Premiere: Phono del Sol performer Appetite – “Little While” video, plus download “Tussy” now

Appetite "Little While" from TERROREYES.TV on Vimeo. Out in August, Appetite's Scattered Smothered Covered has a pretty broad range of emotions, as seen when comparing "Little While" against the first single, "Tussy." For one, the newest song is softer, self-reflecting, and pleading. The video for "Little While" is a perfect mirror -- it was shot on Briggs' "crappy canon digital camera" over time, which he then lined up into a montage of collected memories. He explains: "I mostly filmed moments that were really fun or things I just thought were funny. I always wanted an excuse to share this footage [...]
