LMSFN kicks off monthly series at Eli’s with Antwon and Sad Andy

These days, you can't swing a clear guitar on Valencia without hitting half a dozen random writers who just discovered that Ty Segall moved to LA and rent in San Francisco is expensive and therefore decided that Bay Area art is dead. But just off Valencia on 19th Street, you'll find Different Fur Studios owner Patrick Brown attempting to remind people that the scene isn't dead after all, via his new collective Let's Make Some Fucking Noise (aka LMSFN for the kids). Brown has a hand in booking events organized by LMSFN, but it isn't limited to stuff he likes. [...]

Feels IV may be the perfect Oakland event

I'm just going to come out and say it right away — I am in love with the concept of Feels IV, an event curated by Oakland-based music and culture site Wine & Bowties. You've got a variety of musicians — from the sample-based pop of headliner Ryan Hemsworth and the pop-punk of Oakland's Meat Market to the filthy rap of San Jose native Antwon and dreamy R&B from Abra, (and much, much more). There's a host of DJ's, and a ton of of visual and multimedia art. You have SE Asian street food, Taqueria Sinaloa, and oh yeah , [...]

Celebrate Valentine’s Day with tunes from local artists

It's Valentine's Day, and what better way to express your love for your significant than with music? Here are some creations from a wide variety of Bay Area artists to help you make the most romantic day of the year perfect. Is anything more romantic than an acoustic guitar serenade? Well, maybe. Still, Field Medic, the solo project of Kevin Sullivan of Rin Tin Tiger has released a damn fine Valentine's EP of acoustic love songs that you can check out here for the first time. From the opening line of "I wanna spend my days off on opiates, and [...]

Best of 2013: Russell Jelinek's highlights

John Murry (Photo by Amoreena Berg) I don't feel like ranking things, but here are some Bay Area highlights for 2013, limited to artists I wrote about: Favorite Albums: John Murry - Graceless Age: I tried to listen to Graceless Age in the background while doing some work on the computer. It didn't work. Murry punched me in the gut and took me away from whatever I was doing and totally consumed me. The standout "Little Colored Balloons", about Murry's heroin overdose in the Mission, may one of the most heartbreaking songs ever recorded, but there is so much more [...]

Best of 2013: Patrick Brown on Antwon

"Fuck them all, that's my new motto Rest in power to my friends, I'll see you tomorrow Hard to swallow, that's how I'm living All my girls is poison, word to Michael Bivins" http://youtu.be/Tw5eLIiv5GI I came across the Sprinkle Lab-produced video for "Helicopter" just after it dropped in February 2012 and was immediately a fan. Throbbing bass and hungry lyrics set with an artistry that I hadn't seen or heard in a while among the typically DIY and often overlooked rap scene of the Bay. Since then Antwon has done nothing but build; but dropping well produced songs and videos [...]

Review: The 2013 Treasure Island Music Festival

This year's Treasure Island Music Festival attracted a diverse crowd, most of which partied way too hard during the high-energy dance sets of Saturday to attend Sunday's more guitar-oriented lineup. Sunday was also much colder, with lines for coffee often stretching beyond lines for beer. Schools of glowing white jellyfish drifted through the festival grounds on handheld sticks, as music fans wandered back and forth between the two stages. Giraffage kicked things off at noon during Saturday's stretch of the festival after an introduction from Noise Pop/Salty Artist Management's Chad Heimann aka Chad Salty, performing sample-driven dance music for the [...]

Video: Opski Chan – "Stay Gold"

San Jose's Opski Chan has been putting in work for a long time, even if it took him a while to recognize his talent. "I've been rappin since '91, active with recording since '98 & convinced I was good at it since '06," he tells me via email. "Now I'm just rollin with the punches. Can I say that?" Unfortunately, I didn't come across his work until last month when I saw his video for "Stay Gold", off of his 2011 release Pushers & Prophets. Opski tells me he was introduced to hip-hop via "Wipeout", a collaboration between The Fat [...]

Antwon releases 7" on Suicide Squeeze Records

San Jose punk rocker-turned-rapper Antwon is blowing up this summer with two California festival dates and a debut vinyl release. His "Dying in the Pussy" b/w "Life Is What You Make It" 7-inch single is out now on Suicide Squeeze Records. The two-song EP is available worldwide both digitally and as a limited edition vinyl release with 250 copies on white and black marble vinyl and 500 copies on solid black. My marble copy just came in the mail a few days ago and fits in beautifully with my "#gothsummer" rotation. You know this shit will eventually sell out. Get [...]
