Review + Photos: Alvvays at The Fillmore

Alvvays (photo: Patric Carver) Just about a year and a half ago, Alvvays was playing a dinnertime set on the Mission Stage at Phono del Sol. Last Tuesday, they played a delectable show to a sold-out crowd at the legendary Fillmore.    Ushered in by the same Canadian winds that carried Alvvays from Toronto to the Bay Area, opening band Nap Eyes of Nova Scotia did a fine job of warming the crowd up, but I wish they had taken it further. Lead vocalist Nigel Chapman channeled Lou Reed for their first song, a performance that held the promise of a [...]

Alvvays returns with new album, Fillmore show in October

One of The Bay Bridged's favorite dream-pop bands of late is the breakout Alvvays, who recently announced their long-awaited sophomore album, Antisocialites, and an accompanying fall tour. The tour will bring them back to the Bay for the first time since their Phono del Sol appearance last summer. In early June, Alvvays posted a teaser video on their Twitter feed. As reported by Stereogum, a Reddit sleuth decided to Shazaam the unmarked clip, revealing the title of the song, the album, and more songs. Days later, Alvvays made an official announcement confirming the album's release date of September 8 and the kickoff of an an [...]

The Bay Abridged: July 6 – 19

(illustration: Cassidy Miller) In this recurring feature known as The Bay Abridged, our staff writers provide short, witty recaps on shows they attended around the Bay Area. A scene check, a heat check, and sometimes more — stop by every other Wednesday for the most comprehensive and concise recap of the Bay Area concert scene. Alvvays at Phono del Sol (SF) July 9. Is it a bit self-serving to gush about a performance your organization created? You bet. But damn, Alvvays just blew me away that Saturday afternoon. I had enjoyed their recordings, but had no idea that shimmery pop [...]

The World, Gun Outfit and Flesh World at El Rio (SF) Nov. 11 What a great fucking Wednesday at El Rio. Enticed off the couch by LA's Gun Outfit the evening delivered a rare trifecta. The World are a very new supergroup including reincarnations from the dearly [...]

Alvvays brings genuine cheer and enthusiasm to show at the Independent

With the remnants of the weekend still lingering, finding the motivation to leave your couch and see live music on a Monday night is no easy task. A general sense of weariness can be a staple for Monday crowds, and sometimes that low-energy vibe is mirrored by the performers on stage. Not the case on Monday at the Independent, where Alvvays — seriously enthusiastic to be back in San Francisco, despite a series of recent misfortunes here — played an exuberant set to a surprisingly engaged and responsive crowd. The five-piece power pop group from Canada was performing the first [...]

Alvvays to play NightLife show before Outside Lands appearance

Although Outside Lands has become one of the country’s biggest and most diverse music festivals, its setting in the middle of the city has always given it more of a commuter vibe. It’s not a remote destination event, like Coachella, Bonnaroo or Sasquatch. Instead, it feels much more like a mega concert made specifically for San Franciscans (and other Bay Area residents). Which is why it’s a little confusing that every year a collection of promising young bands end up playing unusually early set times during the opening session on Friday. Part of the allure of Outside Lands is that [...]
