Review + Photos: ALO at Moe’s Alley

ALO (photo: Joshua Huver) ALO, or Animal Liberation Orchestra, the four-piece funk-jam and feel-good groove machine from the San Francisco Bay Area “blew out the walls” of Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz, CA on Friday night. The two-set deep-dive through their catalog (including brand-new additions) served as an excellent warm-up to their headlining set at the Petaluma Music Festival on Saturday. While the band came into what it is today while students at UC Santa Barbara, their friendship began as middle schoolers just over the hill from Santa Cruz in Saratoga, CA. Throughout the set they reminisced on growing up around [...]

Review + Photos: Zach Gill’s Multiverse at Kuumbwa Jazz in Santa Cruz

Zach Gill (photo: Joshua Huver) On Wednesday, August 15, multi-instrumentalist and man of many hats Zach Gill played the first of five consecutive nights for his Tour of The Multiverse at the Kuumbwa Jazz Center in Santa Cruz. Before he hits the road with his other bands in two weeks — a handful of Jack Johnson dates are more or less bookended by a handful of ALO festivals — Gill is committing to a vision he's been curating for months. In conjunction with his third solo album, Life In The Multiverse, Gill has constructed an immersive and captivating psychedelic safari through his mind. [...]

Zach Gill embarks on mid-August tour of the Multiverse

Zach Gill is a riot onstage, seen performing with Jack Johnson at the Greek Theatre, July 27, 2018. Photo by Joshua Huver. ALO's Zach Gill, one of the Bay Area's most prominent musicians of the last two decades, is gearing up for an August tour of the Multiverse. Which in all reality, is just California. Gill's third solo album, Life In The Multiverse saw its release in June 2017. Through the record's twelve tracks, Zach leafs through moments as if flipping through a photo album of Polaroids set to a soundtrack of witty and pensive pop music punctuated by swaggering, [...]

Review + Photos: ALO burns down at Moe’s Alley on 4/20

ALO (photo: Joshua Huver) On Friday, April 20, roughly 300 inner animals were liberated through music at Moe's Alley in Santa Cruz. Animal Liberation Orchestra — guitarist Dan Lebowitz, bassist Steve Adams, and keyboard wizard Zach Gill — recently wrapped their 12th annual Tour D'Amour with a two-night stand at the Fillmore. Friday's show, a one-off warm-up before the band headlined the Wildflower Music Festival in Chico on April 21, was extra loose and groovy. Usual drummer Dave Brogan, who sat out the tour, continued to let Ezra Lipp fill in on skins. The show, slated to start at 9, [...]

Review + Photos: ALO at The Fillmore

ALO (photo: Joshua Huver) The 11th Tour D' Amour, an annual month-long West Coast tour that takes place every February curated by Bay Area favorite ALO, concluded on Saturday, February 25 — the second night of a two-night residency at The Fillmore. Each night was themed and largely adhered to by both the fans and the band up on the stage. While Friday was a classier touch of roses and clover, on Saturday, sparkling glitter and sequined everything lit the dance floor up, including several instances throughout the show where confetti cannons were used to blast rose petals onto the stage and the front [...]

ALO’s Tour D’Amour XI returns with plenty of variety

One of the Bay Area's best long-running bands is the family-oriented rock and roll outfit Animal Liberation Orchestra, or ALO. For the 11th February in a row, the quartet will embark on a West Coast love affair dubbed the Tour D'Amour. On January 4, ALO announced a brand-new EP to be released ahead of Tour D'Amour called Love Songs. If you guessed it might be a collection of ALO-infused covers of love songs, you are correct. Tour D'Amour XI will kick off on February 1 at Moe's Alley in Santa Cruz with a dedicated two-set, no-opener evening with keyboardist Zach Gill, bassist Steve Adams, [...]
