Review: Comfort in Consistency with Allah-Las at Starline Social Club

My first experience at Oakland’s Starline Social Club did not get off to a smooth start. The event page for Allah-Las’ performance at the venue this past Saturday listed that the show would begin at 9 pm and conclude at 11, which gave me the — admittedly unrealistic — expectation of the headliner coming on before 10 and myself returning home at a reasonable hour. I would later learn that Allah-Las was not scheduled to go on until 10:45, an unfortunate surprise only made more irksome by the nearly half hour ordeal that was waiting in line to merely get [...]

Live This Month: October 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #289)

Live This Month: October 2012 — an audio guide through SF concerts this month (Podcast #289) In Live This Month, we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. Live music in the Bay Area in October means two big local music festivals in Hardly Strictly Bluegrass and Treasure Island, but smaller indoor temptations abound all month long. Chris Cohen has a resume full of involvement in great bands, including Deerhoof and Cryptacize, but his new solo album is an intimate work that ranks as one of this [...]

Photos: Sleepy Sun, Entrance Band, Allah-Las @ Moon Block Party in Pomona, CA 6/23/12

The 2nd annual Moon Block Party has come and gone and I figured it best if I post some pictures I took there; just to help establish my alibi for the night. You know, just in case. [nggallery id=moonblock-2012] The party went down in Pomona, CA. There were three stages of psychedelic bands of all persuasions, but I was pretty much at the Moon Stage all day, primarily because Blac Jesus & The Experimentalists kicked things off and I was hooked. The fact that they were later followed by Juju and Dahga Bloom in back-to-back sets of noisy, swirling, heavy [...]

Noise Pop 2012: The Budos Band, Allah-las, Pickwick, Big Tree @ The Independent 2/23/12

A beautiful southern California afternoon in 1974. The local bank’s glass front doors burst open, and out you gallop with two huge bags of cash. Sprinting three full blocks to the pastel Mustang convertible where your aviator-donning getaway driver waits, you hop over the passenger side door and speed away. The out-of-breath bank tellers can only watch as you and your buddy turn around to laugh, ripping 90 miles per hour through a red light before disappearing into the distance. The perfect soundtrack to this nostalgic scene? A Staten Island instrumental ten piece group called The Budos Band. The east [...]
