Live This Month: Old favorites and new voices come to town in September

Summer in the Bay has provided no shortage of opportunities to chase the elusive sun while getting a shot of adrenaline via a well-curated music festival. From the small stages of Phono Del Sol, 20th Street Block Party and Burger Boogaloo, to the record-breaking crowds of Outside Lands, chances are there’s been a favorite artist or two of yours in town. And while these beloved hazy days (Karl permitting, of course) are beginning to dwindle as the fall season rolls in, the good news is that we have a team dedicated to finding the gems for you. Alex Lahey comes up from down under to the Independent

(Photo: Callum Preston) Alex Lahey’s sophomore LP, The Best of Luck Club, is filled with those power-punk anthems she’s known for but this time with a little more sophistication. Songs are personal, sweet and relatable. They touch on topics like mental health, moving in with girlfriends, vibrators, parties — and how she allegedly doesn’t get invited to them anymore. Local hip hop duo DJ Flow & Mani Draper met earlier this year, but the pair's debut LP shows a natural chemistry between the Richmond MC and the local DJ/producer. Classic SF [...]

Photos: Alex Lahey previews some new songs at the Rickshaw Stop

Alex Lahey (photo: Robert Alleyne) Singer Alex Lahey made one final stop before heading to SXSW at the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco last Sunday night, March 12, 2017. She's a gifted storyteller and performer, talking between songs about being broken up with while in Perth or confusing a smoke machine doing its job with a fire starting at a festival one time. She took the time to use the performance as an opportunity to preview some songs from her new, as yet untitled, album. In addition to Lahey were Bay Area band Osage (FKA Museums) and Emily Neveu. Photographer Robert Alleyne has a [...]
